1837—1901The Victorian era of the United Kingdom refers to Queen Victoria's rule which began in June 1837 and concluded in January 1901 [1]. Under the rule of Queen Victoria, the British people enjoyed a long period of prosperity. Profits gained from the overseas British Empire, as well as from industrial improvements at home, allowed a large, educated middle class to develop. Some scholars would extend the beginning of the period—as defined by a variety of sensibilities and political concerns that have come to be associated with the Victorians—back five years to the passage of the Reform Act 1832. The era was preceded by the Regency era and succeeded by the Edwardian period. The latter half of the Victorian era roughly coincided with the first portion of the Belle Époque era of continental Europe and other non-English speaking countries within Europe. The period is often characterized as a long period of peace, known as Pax Britannica, and economic, colonial, and industrial consolidation, temporarily disrupted by the Crimean War, although Britain was at war every year during this period. Towards the end of the century, the policies of New Imperialism led to increasing colonial conflicts and eventually the Anglo-Zanzibar War and the Boer War. Domestically, the agenda was increasingly liberal with a number of shifts in the direction of gradual political reform and the widening of the franchise.

1. Is it Acceptable To Wear Colored Brooklyn Bridal Gown?
August 20, 2008
White wedding is derived from the fact that brides wear white wedding gowns. It may not be necessarily totally white. Ecru, cream or ivory are acceptable white bridal gowns. This white wedding started in the Victorian era. Before this era, brides wear other colors except black which was believed to be the color for mourning. Red was also not a good choice since it symbolizes prostitution based on Western belief.
The wearing of white was first influenced by Queen Victoria. The intention of wearing white bridal gown was more of a choice rather than as a symbol. Later, white bridal gowns be... (read more)

July 30, 2008
In this era of more people buying homes in foreclosure and dealing with a third party (the one that holds the mortgage) there can be unexpected issues that will leave the buyer scratching their heads wondering if the home really was for sale. This was my experience.
About 20 years ago I found this totally super Victorian home that was being sold by a bank. The owners had both died and the bank wanted their money out of it. The home was supposed to be sold "as is" and with the furnishings. When I saw it the personal items were gone and the furniture left was all antiques. The kitchen,... (read more)

April 23, 2008
Wedding dresses have usually been based on the most popular styles of the day. In the 1920’s the wedding dresses were usually short in the front and had a longer train in the back. These wedding dresses were worn with a cloche-style wedding veil. The tendency of the wedding gown to follow current fashions was to continue until the late 1940’s. 12. The Zenith of Wood Architecture: Stick Homes
March 16, 2008
Stick architecture offers a uniquely American blend of Victorian and frontier building styles. Of the many styles developed during the Victorian era, this building style did the most to emphasize wood construction, and was incorporated into more building shapes. It continues as one of the most widely recognized building forms of the late 19th centuries, particularly in the northeast and California. The Stick style emphasized strong, clean lines, many angles, and few curves. With wood construction finally developed as a common building method not reliant on masonry or other materials, homes co... (read more)

14. Understanding Craftsman Architecture
February 10, 2008
Many older homes in cities today have their roots in the Arts and Crafts movement. With their squared, low-lying layouts and sturdy construction, these homes are often easy to spot, but generally not as widely recognized or studied as Victorian homes from the same era - they simply remain unclassified or incorrectly identified as ranchers. As years progress, however, the homes, properly known as "Craftsman" buildings, are outlasting most Victorian buildings, and finding more recognition among preservationists and historic home buyers who want to ask for them by name.

15. Understanding Queen Anne Architecture
February 04, 2008
Queen Anne style homes are often easy to spot, but hard to define. It's partially that elusivity combined with distinctness that makes the style so attractive to buyers and preservationists across the nation. Queen Anne homes are often referred to as the most ornate buildings of the Victorian era, and combine a variety of aesthetics and building methods from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
One of the reasons Queen Anne architecture looks so different from other styles is that it was generally only used on houses. While other styles like Gothic Revival and Federal were being adapted for... (read more)

17. The Story Behind National Style Homes
January 23, 2008
National-style homes are common across the nation, but not always easy to identify. That's because they tend to mix several pre-Victorian era building styles, as well as Native American building traditions. The result is a surprisingly simple and elegant architectural form that's great for building attractive, affordable homes, and has just enough ornamental appeal to work on high-end custom homes.
To understand the look of a National home, it's important to go back to the style's roots. This is perhaps the building method most closely tied with Native American building styles, which d... (read more)

25. The Role Of Fathers In Child Parenting
March 18, 2007
Although the role of mothers has changed little over the years, the role of fathers has changed considerably, particularly over the past 150 years.
During the second half of the nineteenth century, often referred to as the Victorian Era, the father was a very distant and rarely seen figure as far as children were concerned and his responsibility was largely confined to being the family's 'law giver'. This changed during the early part of the twentieth century, due in no small part to the influence of Freud, and by the middle of the century fathers were seen much more as being the family's...
