Vodka is one of the world's most popular distilled beverages. It is a clear liquid containing water and ethanol purified by distillation — often multiple distillation — from a fermented substance such as potatoes, grain (usually rye or wheat) or sugar beet molasses, and an insignificant amount of other substances such as flavorings or unintended impurities. [citation needed]Vodka usually has an alcohol content of 35% to 50% by volume. The classic Polish, Lithuanian and Russian vodka is 40% (80 proof). This can be attributed to the Russian standards for vodka production introduced in 1894 by Alexander III.[1] According to the Vodka Museum in Moscow, Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist, found the perfect percentage to be 38. However, since spirits in his time were taxed on their strength, the percentage was rounded up to 40 to simplify the tax computation. At strengths less than this, Vodka drunk neat (without ice and not mixed with other liquids) can taste "watery" above this strength, the taste of Vodka can have more "burn". Some governments set a minimum alcohol content for a spirit to be called "Vodka". For example, the European Union sets a minimum of 37.5% alcohol by volume.[2] Although Vodka is traditionally drunk neat in the Eastern European and Nordic countries of the "Vodka Belt", its popularity elsewhere owes much to its usefulness in cocktails and other mixed drinks, such as the Bloody Mary, the Screwdriver, the vodka tonic, vodka martini, and most recently vodka red bull. "Vodka" is a diminutive of the Polish word woda for water, also is the romanized form of the Russian Cyrillic "?????", literally pronounced "votka". The word is a diminutive of the Russian word for water ("????", pronounced IPA "v?'da").[3][4]

August 10, 2008
Thanks Russia
Russia is credited with giving vodka to the world and it is traditionally drank straight in an unmixed form there. Americans however, prefer that a liquor have a little more flavor in it in order for it to be consumed without a mixer. While traditionally vodka is derived from distilling fermented potatoes, today it is commonly made from a number of fermented starches or sugars including corn and sugar beets.

6. Does Bob Findlay Have a Next Logical step
July 10, 2008
I have been following, with increasing interest, the rather rapid and successful return to the music industry of Bob Findlay.
Findlays music career almost totally vanished in a haze of vodka around 2001. He returned to the music industry in the capacity of a recording artist in late April 2007. In what seems like the blink of an eye Findlays music is racing up numerous commercial and internet radio stations.
This blink of an eye, however, entailed fourteen months of recapturing songs that he had written dating back as far as 1988. Findlay said that he began recording again purely as ... (read more)

8. Power Nutrition to Stop Hangovers
June 02, 2008
While there are dozens of hangover cures, the most effective are those that are taken before the drinking occurs. Hangover pain is mostly from dehydration, allergic impurities in the alcohol and poisoning known as acetaldehyde damage. Speaking from experience, drinking plenty of water before and during drinking, can lessen the effects of the alcohol. Drinking alcohol with fewer impurities in it, can also lessen hangovers. For example, good quality vodka will tend to give the drinker less of a hangover than dark rum. My best drinking experience, as a young soldier, was fruit juice w... (read more)

If you are going to be traveling to Russia, you probably have been warned about the custom of drinking vodka. There is a lot of hype about it, but here are the facts.
It has only been 15 years or so since Russia became an open country after the fall of communism. The country is shrouded in myths that have developed over a much longer period than that. Some of the myths have a grain of truth while others are laughable. Yes, the Russian mob exists, but not every Russian is a mobster!
