Warsaw (Polish Warszawa [var'?ava] (Ltspkr.png listen); see also other names) is the capital and largest city of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River roughly 370&_160;kilometers (230&_160;mi) from both the Baltic Sea coast and the Carpathian Mountains. Its population as of 2009 was estimated at 1,709,781, and the Warsaw metropolitan area at approximately 2,785,000[1]. The city area is 516.9&_160;square kilometers (199.6&_160;sq&_160;mi), with an agglomeration of 6,100.43&_160;square kilometers (2,355.4&_160;sq&_160;mi) (Warsaw Metro Area&_160;– Obszar Metropolitalny Warszawy).[2] Warsaw is the 9th largest city in the European Union by population.

Warsaw is also known as the "phoenix city", as it received extensive damage during World War II, and rebuilt with the effort of Polish citizens.[5][6] Warsaw has given its name to the Warsaw Confederation, Warsaw Pact, Warsaw Convention, Treaty of Warsaw and the Warsaw Uprising.

An older spelling of Warsaw in Polish is Warszewa or Warszowa, meaning "owned by Warsz".[7] Folk etymology attributes the city name to a fisherman Wars and his wife Sawa.[8] Actually, Warsz was a 12th/13th century nobleman who owned a village located at the site of today's Mariensztat neighbourhood.[9]

The official city name in full is miasto stoleczne Warszawa (English "The Capital City of Warsaw").[10] A native or resident of Warsaw is called Varsovian.
