Apocrita
See text for explanation. A wasp is a predatory, flying, stinging insect, with a stinger and membranous forewings and hindwings. It is related to ant and bee, with all of them being members of order Hymenoptera, but is seperated from ant and bee by having a stinger and no hair, while ant has no stinger, and bee has hair. A rough definition of the term wasp is any member of the aculeate family Vespidae. Almost every pest insect species has at least one wasp species that preys upon it, making wasps critcally important in natural control of their numbers, or natural biocontrol. Parasitic wasps are increasingly used in agricultural pest control as they prey mostly on pest insects and have little impact on crops. A wasp is any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is neither a bee nor ant. The suborder Symphyta, known commonly as sawflies, differ from members of Apocrita by having a broader connection between the mesosoma and metasoma. In addition to this, Symphyta larvae are mostly herbivorous and "caterpillarlike", whereas those of Apocrita are largely predatory or "parasitic" (technically known as parasitoid). The most familiar wasps belong to Aculeata, a division of Apocrita, whose ovipositors are adapted into a venomous stinger, though a great many species do not sting. Aculeata also contains ants and bees, and many wasps are commonly mistaken for bees, and vice-versa. In a similar respect, insects called "velvet ants" (the family Mutillidae) are technically wasps.

Around this time of year, when temperatures drop and there is a chill in the air, we typically spend more times indoors where it's warm and cozy. Maybe our diet changes to more stews and soups – comfort food as some like to call it.
Well, the same thing happens in the animal kingdom. Rodents and insects start to scout out warmer places to live, possibly with easier food sources. Unfortunately, this often results in unwanted house guests like squirrels in the roof, mice scurrying between the walls, or wasps in the attic.
You've probably noticed some of the tell tale signs ... (read more)

June 13, 2007
The same sugar solution that attracts Hummingbirds to your feeder, will also be attractive to ants, bees and wasps. Not only will they drink, they will also contaminate the nectar and sometimes even keep the Hummingbirds from using the feeder. Ants getting inside the feeder will drown and contaminate the nectar as their bodies decompose. As for bees and wasps, I have seen bees and wasps at my feeder so thick that the Hummingbirds couldn't feed at all. Thumping them with a rolled up newspaper seemed to help a little, but every time I thumped one, it wasn't long before it was replaced by another... (read more)
