Spring&_160;· Summer
Autumn&_160;· WinterMeteorological winter is the season having the shortest days and the lowest temperatures. Night-time predominates the winter season, and in some regions it has the highest rate of precipitation as well as prolonged dampness because of permanent snow cover or high precipitation rates coupled with low temperatures, precluding evaporation. Blizzards often develop and cause many transportation delays. A rare meteorological phenomenon encountered during winter is ice fog, which is composed of ice crystals suspended in the air and happening only at very low temperatures, below about -30 °C [1]. Accumulations of snow and ice are mostly associated with winter in the Northern Hemisphere, due to the large land masses there. In the Southern Hemisphere, the more maritime climate and the relative lack of land south of 40 degrees South makes the winters more mild, and thus snow and ice are less common in inhabited regions of the Southern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, snow occurs every year in elevated regions such as the Andes, the Great Dividing Range in Australia, and the mountains of New Zealand, and also occurs in the southerly Patagonia region of South America. Snow occurs year-round in Antarctica. Astronomically, winter starts with the winter solstice and ends with the vernal equinox. Others consider the seasons to be defined by weather, winter being approximately the whole months of June, July, and August in the Southern Hemisphere and December, January, and February in the Northern Hemisphere. By still another definition, the seasons are spoken of, not as quarters of the year, but elastic periods in a particular place determined by the weather, winter in that reckoning being when the weather turns decidedly cold.

Frigid winter nights call for the hot, steaming comfort afforded by a bowl of soup. The appeal of this entrée reaches as far back as the 16th Century, where there are recorded recipes from the American Colonies. A woman named Eliza Smith had written a book of recipes called “The Complete Housewife”, and it was published by William Parks in Williamsburg, VA, in 1742. It had several recipes for soups and bisques.
Soup for sale was originated in Paris, France. It was an inexpensive meal sold by street vendors, called “restaure”, and advertised as a remedy to combat physical exhaustion. An en... (read more)

7. Weather the Storm with Quality Tire Chains
November 21, 2008
I don’t have much experience with snow. Growing in up sunny Las Vegas, I became an expert blackjack player and a connoisseur of local ‘entertainers’, but topics such as winter preparedness always escaped me. But all this changed when I was invited on a winter trip to the mountains with my friend Bob.
Bob had word that the abominable snowman had been sighted in a little known wooded area and he was determined to investigate. So we packed up our skis and other supplies in my old 1958 Edsel Amblewagon and hit the road.
As we drove, Bob gave me the lowdown on the elusive snowman... (read more)

11. La Thuile - Espace San Bernardo Italian Ski Resort
November 20, 2008
Essentially, La Thuile is in the Aosta Valley, with France, Switzerland and the Piedmont (one of the twenty regions of Italy), bordering to the west, north and southeast respectively. This valley is so unique—especially as it lies midway in the Alps—because it has the least population (and a lesser density of people) of all twenty Italian regions. Down near the valley lowlands, some towns speak French and even German as their first languages. The skiing, too, is just as diverse as the people who inhabit the region.

13. Newbury Winter Festival - a ‘jumping' joy for many!
November 20, 2008
Horse Racing, although known as the ‘sport of kings’ is a popular attraction all year round for Britons from many different backgrounds, and is certainly not restricted to kings and their courtiers! Although the town of Newbury in Berkshire hosted its first horse race over 200 years ago at the time of the battle of Waterloo, a racecourse wasn’t developed in the town until the early 20th century, following a royal intervention. It was King Edward VII that lent support to the notion of a new course at Newbury. With his considerable backing, a licence was granted by the Jockey Club which in ... (read more)

Wool rugs have been around for centuries. It is not surprising when you realise that wool is one of the most durable fibres in the world. It sheds water, holds dye extremely well and is flame-retardant. Wool also absorbs humidity which keeps rooms cooler in the summer but warmer in the winter. Wool has been used to create some of the most beautiful floor covering rugs, throws and carpets made today. Some of the best wool rugs get handed down through the generations and can last for hundreds of years. Often wool rugs look better after a century of use compared to when they are first wov... 15. Growing and Cloning Great Looking Plants through Aeroponics
November 20, 2008
Take heart my fellow hobbyist gardeners. Just the colder winter months are soon upon us doesn't mean we can't continue to grow vibrant, healthy plants indoors. One method I plan on trying out this winter season is aeroponics. Surprisingly, an aeroponics system doesn't need a large amount of space nor potting soil to see luscious results.
Aeroponics is a way of growing plants indoors using air or mist instead of a soil environment. The basic principle is to grow plants in a closed or semi-closed environment. Aeroponics works by spraying the roots of the plants with a nutrient rich so... (read more)

21. Preparing Your Pup For Winter
November 21, 2008
Would you wear shorts and a tank top during the winter months? In most parts of the country, the answer would clearly be no. Why? The weather would be too cold, so you would wear your warm things. Well, what about your pup?
We are a bit hypocritical when it comes to our pets. We treat them as though they are a part of our family, but then expect them to be able to handle certain aspects of life as though they are a wild animal. This often manifests during the winter when we don’t prepare our pup for the season.
Dogs have fur for a reason, right? Yes, but the fur is not armor. Dogs c... (read more)

25. Wet winter driving's no fun... but here's how to drive safely!
November 21, 2008
The evidence is all around. British winters seem to be getting greyer, technically warmer and most definitely wetter, so we need to take extra care when driving.
As a rule of thumb, car breakdown service Autonational Rescue recommends the use of headlights whenever it’s raining.
Slow down at the first sign of rain. Many roads become very slippery when rain first mixes with road dirt and oil, because together they form a greasy film on the road’s surface.
Says Autonational Rescue:
In all sorts of rain, or slushy winter snow, you can prevent accidents by driving slowly and ca... (read more)
