Search Results - Wood

Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

Wood is hard, fibrous, lignified structural tissue produced as secondary xylem in the stems of woody plants, notably trees but also shrubs. In a living tree it conducts water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues, and has a support function, enabling plants to reach large sizes. Wood may also refer to other plant materials and tissues with comparable properties.

People have used wood for millennia for many purposes, primarily as a construction material, for making tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artworks, paper, and as a fuel. Wood can be dated by dendrochronology and carbon dating to make inferences about when a wooden object was created and the varying tree-ring widths and isotopic abundances give clues to the prevailing climate at that time.[1]

A tree increases in diameter by the formation, between the old wood and the inner bark, of new woody layers which envelop the entire stem, living branches, and roots. Where there are clear seasons, this can happen in a discrete pattern, leading to what is known as growth rings, as can be seen on the end of a log. If these seasons are annual these growth rings are annual rings. Where there is no seasonal difference growth rings are likely to be indistinct or absent.

Within a growth ring it may be possible to see two parts. The part nearest the center of the tree is more open textured and almost invariably lighter in colour than that near the outer portion of the ring. The inner portion is formed early in the season, when growth is comparatively rapid; it is known as early wood or spring wood. The outer portion is the late wood or summer wood, being produced in the summer.[2] In white pines there is not much contrast in the different parts of the ring, and as a result the wood is very uniform in texture and is easy to work. In hard pines, on the other hand, the late wood is very dense and is deep-colored, presenting a very decided contrast to the soft, straw-colored early wood. In ring-porous woods each season's growth is always well defined, because the large pores of the spring abut on the denser tissue of the fall before. In the diffuse-porous woods, the demarcation between rings is not always so clear and in some cases is almost (if not entirely) invisible to the unaided eye.

November 21, 2008

It really all depends on the size of the tree. According to paper manufacturer Boise Cascade, however, a cord of wood (wood stacked 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet, or 128 cubic feet) produces nearly 90,000 sheets of paper or 2,700 copies of a 35-page newspaper! But how many trees does it take to make a cord of wood? “Well, that depends, of course, on the size of the trees. Here are some examples: It would take 50 trees 4 inches in diameter, 10 trees 8 inches in diameter, or 3 trees 14 inches in diameter to make a cord of wood.” – The Old Farmers Almanac On average a major metropolita... 4. Wooden Toys - Damaging The Environment?
November 21, 2008

Wooden Toys - Damaging The Environment? Wood seems like a very environmentally friendly, safe material to make toys from. After all, it's natural, can be sustainably produced, and produces no toxic chemicals on its own. However, wood doesn't always mean a toy is safe or good for the environment. Depending on how the toys are produced, wooden toys can be just as destructive and unhealthy as plastic ones. Toys produced from wood that's not grown sustainably make up the majority of the market. These trees are often harvested from wild forests, with no plans in place to replace them. After t... (read more)

9. Making a Pleated Valance
November 21, 2008

When making a pleated valance, we first suggest that a pattern be made on paper. Six inches should be allowed for each pleat with space between each pleat of eight inches in width. Let’s assume, for example, that a valance is to be made into five pleats. It will be necessary to allow 30" for the pleats. There are to be 6 spaces between the pleats of 8" each, making a total of 48". The material needed at the two ends to turn the corners and reach the window trim should be at least 4" on each end, making 8" for two turnbacks. Add 1/2" at each end for hems, making 1" additional. The total w... (read more)

10. Machine-Made Rugs and Carpets
November 21, 2008

In the early twentieth century, very excellent carpets began to be produced on looms driven by steam or other mechanical power. Because of the nature of the process they were usually woven in long strips, rather than the rug shape that is natural to the hand loom. The looms had been improved to allow the weaving of rugs of considerable width, in place of the older ones, which were made up of strips sewed together like an old-fashioned carpet. Ingrain carpet is one of the oldest machine weaves. It is made in strips a yard wide, the best grades being all wool, while in cheaper qualities so... (read more)

13. ORIGINS OF THE WORD "SABOTAGE"
November 18, 2008

It is generally assumed that the word “sabotage” had its origins in the French word sabot, which refers to a large, heavy wooden clog made of a single piece of wood and worn by workers. However, there are quite a few theories of the link between those clogs and a word referring to the deliberate destruction of property by an enemy or protesting workers, and even a theory that the word relates to a different sort of shoe altogether. Possibly the most common theory of the origin of the term is that the first instances of sabotage were French Luddites who threw their wooden clogs into power... (read more)
