Researchers from Yale are saying that if they can inhibit a certain protein in the brain it might be the key they're trying to find to reverse the effects of Alzheimer's disease. Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, that published the researchers study, pointed to high levels of a protein known as Striatal-Enriched tyrosine Phosphatase, or STEP, as a huge factor in Alzheimer's This was based on previous studies that showed high-elevated activity of STEP in humans with Alzheimer's, the tests were conducted by researchers for Yale on two sets of mice, With both sets of mice engineered to have Alzheimer's, one set of the mice was chosen to have reduced STEP protein levels. The mice that had reduced STEP protein levels were eventually able to complete mazes in amount of time as mice that didn't have Alzheimer's. Why this is so important as stated by Paul Lombroso, senior author of the study and professor in the Yale Child Study Center and the Departments of Neurobiology and Psychiatry of Yale School of Medicine, is that it suggest that reducing the STEP levels genetically reduces the effects of Alzheimer's. He said, "that the excess of STEP damages certain neutrons. The protein removes glutamate receptors on the neurons' surface, which are crucial in forming long-term memories. The study suggests that too high a level of STEP, removes glutamate receptors, which in turns strips away the ability to memorize and learn. Professor Lambroso said "mice with reduced levels of STEP showed a complete reversal of the effects Alzheimer's by six months." There will be more research none to see whether any symptoms of Alzheimer's will return after six the months or longer. He hoping for more research, in hope it will lead to drug that will or could inhibit the STEP protein in humans. He was asked if the STEP levels might play a factor in the dulling of the mind the usually comes with ageing, Lombroso said that it has not be ruled out but no research is being conducted at this time.
