expository essays involve less research and are composed of few pages. It is shorter than argumentative essays. The common use of expository essays is for in-class assignments for students in GED and GRE. Argumentative essays involve detailed research of literature of materials that have been published initially. Argumentative essays also might require empirical research where the student will be required to collect data through instrumentals like interviews, surveys, experiments, and observations. The research will enable the student to have a detailed understanding of the topic and have varied points of view so that they are able to choose a point of view and argue with the data and information that they have been able to collect. No matter the extent in which the research has been done and the data that has been collected, there is a need to have a clear thesis statement for the student so that they are able to come up with a point of view which they will stand. They are supposed to follow a sound reasoning. Components of an argumentative essay i. Clear and precise thesis statement which appears in the first paragraph. The writer should give a general overview of the topic and its exigence (importance) which is why someone should care about the topic. The last bit of the first paragraph is for the student to present the thesis statement. The thesis statement should be narrowed down to ensure that it follows the guidelines of the assignment. ii. Clear flow of introduction, body, and conclusion. Transition is what clues the content of the essay together. Without a logical flow of the essay, the reader will be lost in following the argument and the structure will not be successful. iii. Body paragraphs should include support of evidence. Each paragraph should be limited to the discussion of one idea. With this, there will be a clear flow and direction of the essay. In addition, there will be an ease of readership for the audience. Argumentative essays should also have sections which will discuss the various points of view. This will depend on the length of the assignment but in most cases, the students should ensure that at least a paragraph or two is dedicated to discussing opposing views of the topic. It is not right to outrightly point opposing views as wrong, but they can argue that they might not be informed or that the points of view are out of date. iv. There is need to have factual evidence that will inform the argument. There should be research that will be used to support the argument and thesis statement. The thesis should be supported by statistics, anecdotes, or facts. v. Conclusion should also be provided that will restate the thesis, and put it in light of evidence that has been provided. It is at this stage that the writer will be required to have a lasting impression to the reader. So it requires that the conclusion be effective, and logical. The conclusion should not include new information that has not been introduced.
