Search Results - Employee

Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

Employment is a contract between two parties, one being the employer and the other being the employee. An employee may be defined as "A person in the service of another under any contract of hire, express or implied, oral or written, where the employer has the power or right to control and direct the employee in the material details of how the work is to be performed." Black's Law Dictionary page 471 (5th ed. 1979).

In a commercial setting, the employer conceives of a productive activity, generally with the intention of generating a profit, and the employee contributes labour to the enterprise, usually in return for payment of wages. Employment also exists in the public, non-profit and household sectors. To the extent that employment or the economic equivalent is not universal, unemployment exists.

An employer is a person or institution that hires employees or workers. Employers offer hourly wages or a salary in exchange for the worker's labor power, depending upon whether the employee is paid by the hour or a set rate per pay period. A salaried employee is typically not paid more for more hours worked than the minimum, whereas wages are paid for all hours worked, including overtime.

Employers include individuals hiring a babysitter to governments and businesses which may hire many thousands of employees. In most western societies, governments are the largest single employers but most of the work force is employed in small and medium businesses in the private sector.

2. What do employers look for on a credit report?
November 06, 2009

Employers review a credit report to help facilitate the hiring of an individual. They do background checks of unlawful conduct which may disrupt the business environment. Credit reports are used on a regular basis to help creditors determine whether you are creditworthy. Your credit report tells a story of your credit, but for employers, he may mention the limits of your trust. November 06, 2009

Oftentimes, the nature of relocation is such that it has to happen in a relatively short period of time. In the case of a sudden relocation requirement, acquiring a residence for the employee to move into may not always be possible in the given duration of time. Doing a rushed job is not an option; there can be no compromise on the living situation of the employee, as they are already sacrificing a lot for the move. Asking the employee to stay in a ho... November 06, 2009

In the 1960s, a young person could opt for training on the job. Many young people, in the old days, were already learning a trade before they graduated from High School. It was such a great idea that some memorable career professionals were produced. Seeing this success... (read more)

12. Should Small Businesses Invest in HR Software?
November 05, 2009

A good number of smaller businesses (less than 250 employees) find it difficult to justify hiring a dedicated personnel or HR manager, or investing in HR software. The result is that the function is bolted on to the role of a PA or senior secretary.Employee information is kept in paper files, alongside extracts of payroll reports with a few spreadsheets trying to keep a grip on the basic facts. It’s not ideal scenario especially if the small business suddenly mushrooms becoming large enough to present administrative headaches. Added to that, there are the ever-increasing bureaucratic...
