The bulk of managers like to think that they are good motivators of people but the sad fact is that their beliefs and reality are quite often poles apart. This is a guaranteed way to get your staff on side. At meetings, always canvas for their opinions, to them and allow their colleagues to contribute then decide as a whole group on the way forward. You may even find someone comes up with a better solution to a situation than you do it yourself. When your staff are involved in the departmental decision making they are more likely to be receptive to any changes in procedure or policy, which will make your life a lot easier in the long term. If the individuals in the department feel that they are pulling in the same direction, the department will function much more smoothly in all respects. Two-organize regular social events. Regular might mean only once every two months, it doesn’t matter, but make sure that you organize something different each time for example a pub games evening, a darts match against another department and so on. An alternative would be a weekly trip to a local bar for lunch on Fridays, just to get out of the workplace for a while and to help people wind down for the weekend. Two or three times a year it is worth the company spending some money on a staff day out, or if you have the facilities add your own premises, at the event come to you.
