I've been thinking about what defines a good worker, an ideal employee or a beneficial team member. What characteristics do we look for in someone who is going to work side-by-side with us - be it an employee, a business partner, a team member, a volunteer or even just someone helping us paint our deck? And how can we assist in creating those characteristics if they don't already exist? A team member who is devoted and here by choice. First and foremost, a team member should be dedicated to us because they really like us and/or our cause. They totally "get" what we are about and what we are trying to accomplish. Generally they have the same or similar values as we do and they want to be a part of creating success. A team member with good worth ethic takes pride in their job, understands the value of working hard and putting in a good performance every time. They aren't afraid to commit themselves to helping us achieve our goals. Being a part of the big picture is as rewarding to them as it is to us. How can we possibly help in the creation of one? For starters, we must treat our team with respect. We certainly can't reach our goals without them and their commitment, so they are deserving of our utmost respect. Secondly, we must be fair in our dealings with them, with others, and with ourselves. No favoritism, no "pets". Nothing should be offered to one without being offered to the rest. No special privileges or rewards without truly earning them. Are we a team member who doesn't feel dedicated? Why? Are we being treated fairly and with respect? Do we have a good relationship with the team leader? Are we interested in the end-goal and really want to be a part of it? If we answered yes to these questions but still don't feel the level of devotion we would like to, we need to look inward. Do we know what our strengths are? If not, we need to take the time to honestly assess our strengths and weaknesses. Ask for feedback from others on their observations. Then we need to find a way to ensure that our strengths are being utilized for the benefit of the entire team. Being able to perform the tasks we do well will give us a sense of satisfaction. Maybe this is all we really need to help us bump up the commitment level. When does being a devoted worker cross the line to being a workaholic? Don't laugh - this line can be a bit blurry sometimes! Many of us consider ourselves ambitious, motivated and driven for success because we love what we do and want to make a difference. That all sounds well and good on the surface but will we know when we've crossed the line? - Is work our top priority even when we're not in the office?
- Does work take precedence over our family time?
- Does our social life revolve around work-related events?
- Is work on our mind 24/7?
- Do we get upset when others suggest that we work too much?
- Do we find it difficult or impossible to take a vacation without bringing work with us?
Believe it or not, these truly are signs of being a workaholic! So if we answer yes to a high majority of the questions above, we really need to reassess our motivation, our priorities and what we really want to accomplish with our lives. Being a part of a loyal group of people devoted to the same cause is harmonious and empowering and can be obtained with the right mix of expectations on everyone's part. I want to end this article with a question as research for a possible future article: Do you think it's possible for a team member to be too devoted or too involved, without crossing the line into workaholic-ism? Let me know your thoughts!
