Perhaps one of the most common roof installation projects is of a shingle-style roof. Contrary to popular belief, the installation process isn’t so difficult, so long as you take the time to make certain everything is straight while beginning the project from the bottom up. In this article, we will outline the steps necessary to installing a shingle roof DIY. Step 1: Roll out your felt and nail in horizontal strips, beginning at the bottom edge of the roof. Hammer a nail every few feet until one by one, each strip is secure. With each successive row, the felt should overlap the edge of the one next to it by roughly an inch or so. Continue in this fashion on each side of the roof, ending with the strip on the peak. Step 2: Vertically lay your tape at the edge and mark it at one foot. Do the same to the other end, and using a chalk-line, snap a straight horizontal line between the two points. Continue marking in 1ft increments, making sure to snap a new line each time. When you are finished, you should have a series of horizontal lines running up the course of the structure. These lines will act as a guide for the shingles later on. Step 3: As a test, cut three tabs off one shingle and lay the remaining material along the edge of the roof, securing it with nails every foot or so. Repeat this process until the bottom edge is covered on each side. Step 4: On the edge, lay a full shingle, so that the top lines up with the first horizontal line snapped earlier. Hammer 4 nails into the material, each on the top third of it. Each tab should hang down to the edge, overlapping the starting strip. Spaces between each tab will be completely filled with the starter strip. Lay successive shingles next to one another until you’ve reached the other end. Step 5: The next row will be laid with the tops of the shingles on the following chalk-line. The tabs should overlap those from the first course. Make it so the tabs are staggered in regard to the first row, with spaces between the upper tabs situated in the middle of the lower ones. Each row of upper tabs should cover the nail-heads on the shingles below them. Continue in this way until the ridge is completed. Step 6: In order to finish the ridge, begin by cutting tabs from new shingles, using a razor and level, and laying each tab sideways over the ridge. They should be bent to fit.
