Moving costs money regardless of whether you are moving a few streets away, to a new town or out of the state. Check discount stores and dollar stores for cheap packing supplies such as tape, a tape dispenser, black markers and so on. Instead of going out and buying bubble wrap or other expensive materials to wrap your breakaway items in such as dishes and vases use old newspapers or tissue paper that you have lying around your home. If you must use a company to move then do your research before you hire one. Check online and call around for estimates. If using professional movers is a necessity for you then to cut down on costs hire them only to move and not to pack. Do all of your own packing. Enlist the help of loved ones and friends for this purpose and you will be able to get it done faster. If you are not relocating very far away or if you do not have too much stuff then consider doing it yourself with some help from those closest to you. Find someone who owns a truck (or two people who own trucks!). See if you can find a few other people to help load your boxes as well as those that can do the heavy lifting (i.e. your furniture and big ticket items). Just make sure you provide cold drinks and food for your helpers. You might also want to offer them a token of appreciation in the form of some money or a small gift. If you have small children or pets then hiring someone to watch them while you are in the processing of loading the truck and unloading at the new residence can be costly. In this case it would be more cost effective for you to ask a loved one, friend or neighbor if they could babysit or pet sit until everything is completed. This can a stressful time for youngsters and animals which is another reason why it is best to place them elsewhere until everything is completed and you are settled into your new home.
