Mel Kay has seen fantastic success with his company, Golden State Fence. Although it’s full-speed ahead for him today, it didn’t always look so promising for ‘the fence guy.’ Mel Kay is a self-made fencing industry giant in Southern California who built his business from the ground up with his own two hands. Well, and with the eventual help of up to 750 extra pairs of hands. Unfortunately, in the early days of the fencing company, Melvin actually critically injured one of those hands and severed part of a finger while working at a sawmill that he had opened in Idaho. Shortly following this accident, it became apparent to Melvin that the sawmill wasn’t going anywhere and that his real opportunity lay in the fencing company back home. He closed up shop and returned to California. After over 40 years in business, his fencing company, Golden State Fence, was raking in $150 million yearly. A portion of his success had been due to his federal contracts to not only build fences surrounding a few of California’s illegal immigration detention centers, but the company also was hired to build portions of the southern border fence. Mel Kay worked to diversify his market and it began to pay off during the housing boom. Aside from supplying the materials as well as installation services for various types of fencing, his company also carries electronic and manual gates for private homes and gated communities alike. Dog runs and sports complex surrounds are other types of products Golden State Fence specializes in. Well, where is Mel Kay now? Still successfully running Southern California’s largest fencing company. State and federal contracts abound for Mel Kay. His reputation for quality and customer satisfaction has earned him a great deal of respect and admiration in the fencing industry. His customer base continues to grow in the private sector as well, without regard to the current unfavorable state of the national economy. What’s next for Melvin and Golden State Fence? He will continue to wait for the housing market to rebound while bidding on federal jobs. In the meantime, however, he’s not doing too badly. He currently employs 450 people and is still known as a good boss who treats his employees well. Regardless of the economy, Golden State Fence employees are among the highest paid in the region’s fence building industry. That is a good recipe for success.
