THE TOOTHLESS LION – GOVERNMENT WITHOUT REINS An enigmatic view of a household name. It has faced the most incredible challenges and taken on as many faces as there have been power seekers in the world, but despite stretched credibility, it manages to hold world attention with the assurance of centuries to come. Never mind what it can be but let us delve a little deeper and hazard a guess at the results. It has an inexplicable place in the hearts of many who would otherwise find reasons to ignore it. It appears to work and yet it gets blamed for practically anything that goes wrong despite not having more than the power of influence which in turn can only be utilized with complete transparency or face the consequences if things go wrong as a result. Recently, it looked as if its days were over as the world gnashed its teeth in holy fury or underspent frustration which could very easily have found vent on other more meaningful things. In fact, despite having to bend at best at right angle to understand and accept the blame, it had little if anything to do with what it was forced by public uproar to admit association with. If that is not enough, perhaps we could stare at this strange animal in the eyes and try and work out why it just stands there and be noticed when there are other obviously much better things to do – especially when we insist it should do little else. More´s the pity, but little else it is and little else we expect and criticize it to do. It has its own views about where it comes from and its power of elevation stems from what people do not know about its right to take on the stand. It gives a toss about democracy but ensures that it is always available. It can send ambitious manipulators into shrouded obscurity or raise the flavor of a favored few who would otherwise have stood little chance at their moment of doubt. It has not always been the case and perhaps the modern effort in this respect. is a better way of doing things. Or is it? Whilst the world richer societies frenetically invest in style and quantity to “better thy neighbor” and get the apparently necessary attention, THEY do it with a gesture or a tactful presence nervously controlled by those who would have them gyrating usefully 25 hours a day. It takes a strange animal indeed which appears to need this bizarre orchestration but which probably and essentially, for its own survival , eventually does things its own way. More power to their elbow ? Maybe, but if this convoluted and improbable formula of doing things had been written down, it is doubtful that this would have been seriously received by any aspiring to take their place. After all, even with quantum logic, symmetrical or not, it is not too difficult to work a few things out if they balance well, but something so unpredictable and so loosely dependent on public whim requires a little more than logic to survive. Some would say force of habit, but then there are other habitual things which lead to nowhere Some simply mouth and gesticulate disbelievingly as they would at the sudden appearance of the Dodo on the dinner table, but at the end of the day, most are left with a sneaky feeling that despite change for its own sake, it has a place somewhere in that security concern which outweighs the effort to subject it to unfair test. But WHAT is it ? If this were not bad enough for some unromantic dissidents, the loftiness demanded surprisingly diminishes with general contemporary increases in comfort as also with lessening of social fear. Despite appearing at times to be no better than the most common example of daily household warfare, it secures it´s strength in the happy association with those who can identify, understand and fight for it. - And yet, it would not survive if it held the holy ground too securely, too neatly, too exemplary. It could be a punch bag or a pair of wings, but lamentably it is like the other side of the mirror and where it would be it is not and where it is, it stands only to be seen and unfortunately never to be heard. What a remarkable way of doing things...! Your guessed it - MONARCHY! The writer Michael Mifsud started his journalistic life at the age of 16 in the House of Commons London. He went into press and public relations before publishing Britain´s first trade journal for chauffeurs. His innovative business ventures attracted wealth and some were more socially based than economically geared. He entered the Order of Knights Templar at an early age and rose to second in command of their world affairs subsequently becoming director of the British Monarchist League to later travel with the British Royals as a member of the accompanying Press team for over ten years. The close association with the work of the Royal couple and his membership of the Commonwealth Press Union proved to him beyond doubt the importance of the system as a democratic platform, impressed beyond expectation by the heartfelt and singular efforts of the Crown representatives. ------------------------------------------------- Since this article was written the writer has had a great deal of unsolicited correspondence for and against the system of Government but all felt closer to the Royals than they said they would feel for any Republican President. It is now become abundantly clear that Monarchies are faring better economically and socially then the Republican models. Left to their own devices, the Crown Heads exposed to criticism and potential threat, maintain a serene and exemplary role derived from centuries of family experience and being born to the role. Spain despite its natural leaning to the left finds comfort and support in its Monarch who was suddenly thrust into the front line after the abdication of his father. Against popular fatalistic opinion drawn from history, it is now admired and without doubt a major force in the modernization and future prosperity of the country.
