Most of the jewelry makers from different parts of the world prefer to use a ring blank since they provide a foundation on which the design can be carved with precision. These ring blanks generally have a bowl shaped or a flat space above on which the decoration can be done with ease. The space for decoration is oval or circular in the case of flat blanks and on the other hand it can be circular, oval, diamond shaped or square in the case of bowl shaped ring blanks. Around the edge of a bowl shaped blank, you may also find prongs which help in holding the stones. These bowl shaped blanks may also have some scrolled decoration and they are easy to adjust according to your choice of design. There are different methods of using these ring blanks depending on which type of blanks you are planning to use. Some of the common types and the direction for using them are mentioned below- - In case of the flat ring blanks, it is always a good idea to slowly clean the blank with the help of alcohol and a piece of cotton. After rubbing the surface with the cotton swab; you will have to wipe it properly with a tissue or a towel. Doing this will help in eliminating the dirt on the surface of the blank which generally causes a problem while gluing. Rhinestones with a flat back are ideal for usage with the flat blanks. It is easy to put glue on the flat surfaces and once it dries, the ring blank will hold the rhinestone properly. A small amount of glue is required which is to be evenly spread on the back surface. Doing this will help in preventing the glue coming out from the sides. After putting the glue you will have to press the stone on the flat ring blank. Once that is done, take a foam piece and fix the ring on it. This will avoid the sliding of the setting till the time the glue dries up completely. - For the bowl shaped ring blanks, the first step should be the same where the inside part of the blank should be cleaned properly with cotton and alcohol. After that you will have to rub the inside of the bowl gently with the piece of cotton and then dry it with a piece of soft cloth. For the blanks which comes with prongs, it is advisable to use cabochon which is a round and polished gemstone with a flat back. For the blank which doesn’t have prongs, patterned paper and resin can be used. Put a little bit of glue inside the bowl and fix the cabochon. The prongs should be gently bent on the cabochon which will help in holding the stone in place. Take a piece of patterned paper and cut it in such a shape that it fits the bottom of the ring blank properly. You have the choice of creating graphics or using colored pens for making attractive designs. Once this is done, you can put the piece of paper inside the blank. Fill the bowl with resin and make sure that a slight bubble of resin can be seen. Put the ring into the foam and let it dry properly. To see our latest collection, click here bead-workshop.
