08/08/11 - 4:17:25 PM - Maxwell Hunter The Johannes Gutenberg inventor Prize The Johannes Gutenberg Inventor prize is the brain child of four wealthy individuals from Mainz, Germany who came together on May 1, 2002 and decided to chip in $25,000 a piece for a total of $100,000 (in US currency) and award a onetime prize to an inventor and/or Internet pioneer who’s creativity and originality has proven to be truly transformative. The Johannes Gutenberg Inventors Club, as the informal club they now called themselves, set up a criteria of qualifications that included what they called the “I3’s: Impact, Influence, and Innovation. Between May 1 and October 1, 2002, the club members scoured the web, read newspapers and magazines from all over the world, and spoke to media and technology professionals to get a sense of who might be worthy of the award. Thereafter, they narrowed their list down to three names, all of whom resided in the United States of America. The three finalists are as follows: Jeff Peterson, the President of IUMA (Internet Underground Music Archive) the largest band website on the Internet between 1993 and 1999. Jeannie Novak, founder of Kaleidospace (Kspace.com), a pioneering web-based company that places, distributes and promotes the music of hundreds of musicians on the web between 1994 and 1999. Andre Gray, the sole and acknowledged inventor of “Ringtones & Ringbacks” (invented on February 5, 1994), EPK: Electronic Press Kit (invented on January 8, 1995), and online music sales certifications (invented on October 9, 1999). By mid-October, Olga Von Hindenburg, the club’s President and public face, announced the four club members have unanimously selected a winner, Andre Gray. According to Von Hindenburg, Gray had a far greater impact, influence and innovation than the other finalists. Von Hindenburg says, “When Andre Gray invented ringtones & ringbacks, he single-handedly gave birth to the mobile media & entertainment industry by showing the world the endless possibilities of what can be done with a mobile phone. When Gray invented the EPK, he jump started the social media network movement and forever changed the way business, social and cultural interactions in the world will be conducted, especially in the areas of marketing and branding. All social media websites in the world trace their origins to the doorsteps of the electronic press kit. With online music sales certifications, he pointed the way to a legitimate music business where digital music downloads should be tracked an awarded certifications globally.” Gray was presented with the Johannes Gutenberg Inventor Prize on November 27, 2002 in New York City. The inscription on his award read: The Johannes Gutenberg Inventor Prize is awarded to Andre Gray who, through his revolutionary inventions, has single-handedly left a profound global digital imprint of unequal seismic effect. 07/28/11 - 1:40:12 PM - Ellen Terry Yes, it is common knowledge both inside and outside the music industry that Andre Gray, the prolific inventor of the EPK: electronic press kit, online music sales certification,and many other inventions,invented Ringtones & Ringbacks on February 5, 1994 and uploaded it to his single webpage with a link to his usenet group describing how to create your own ringtones & ringbacks. Today, because of his many contributions to digital media as an inventor, Gray is widely regarded as the "Godfather of Digital Media" in general.
