If there's anything troublesome about your ownership of granite countertops, it is dealing with stains. Nothing makes you crestfallen about your granite top than seeing its beauty ruined by a stain. But then again, there are several stain removal solutions available, and one of them is the application of a poultice. As such, learning to apply a poultice to your granite kitchen countertop is a must for every owner. What is a poultice in the first place? It is a solution composed of an absorbent material and a cleaning agent or chemical. It is designed to absorb the stain from granite surfaces, like countertops and floors, while cleaning out the stain. What is it composed of? The absorbent material is usually talc powder or unbleached flour. The chemical solution can be of a range of substances, from acetone, to different cleaning solutions used at home or designed specifically for stone surfaces. The selection of the chemical cleaning solution depends mostly on the type of stone surface and the stain to be removed. To know which chemicals to use and in what amounts, there are plenty of resources online, or better yet, consult with your granite fabricator or provider. They are usually helpful in providing information about removing stains and poultices. Once you have the right composition, you need to mix the poultice until it becomes a thick texture, similar to a putty or batter. It is essential to get this kind of texture for the poultice to be effective. The next step is to apply the poultice over the stained surface with consistency of about 1/4 of an inch. Then, seal the poultice over the surface through a plastic wrap that is sealed with tape on the edges. Let the mixture dry and cure for 24 to 48 hours. Afterwards, just scrape the poultice off from the surface then rinse with water repeatedly. Of course, a poultice is not effective in all cases. Since the approach to stain removal depends on the stain and the stone used for the kitchen countertops, the effectiveness would vary. But even so, a poultice gets the job done most of the times. And if not, usually it's just a question of using the right cleaning agent and mixture to get rid of the stain. But if you're not comfortable with doing this yourself, it's best to leave it to your granite provider. You may have to spend extra, but at least you'll be leaving the job to those who does this for a living.
