Many students find difficulty in writing descriptive essay. One reason for the difficulty is that they do not know the purpose behind writing descriptive essay. Descriptive essay is an essay used to describe a person, animal, location, or event. There are two kinds of descriptive essay. The objective descriptive essay is used when the student seeks to describe the subject of the descriptive essay in a blunt, straightforward and factual way by revealing its appearing or condition. For example, an eagle can be described as a bird with hooked beaks, curved claws, sharp eyesight, strong wings and powerful bodies. The impressionistic descriptive essay is used when the student seeks to impart a certain mood or feeling to the readers. For example, Alfred Lord Tennyson once described an eagle in this manner “ He clasps the crag with crooked hands; close to the sun in lonely lands, ringed with the azure world, he stands.” Here, the Alfred Lord Tennyson seeks to create an impression of the might of an eagle. In choosing whether to write an objective descriptive essay or subjective descriptive essay, the students need to understand that there are certain basic features of a descriptive essay which the students need to know. 1. Write only about the subject of the descriptive essay. Many students commit the mistake of describing different subjects in the descriptive essay which may confuse the readers. In writing a descriptive essay students should focus only on the subject of the descriptive essay. If you want to describe your favorite dog or cat then write only about your favorite dog or animal. If topic of the descriptive essay is a famous person then you should write only about the famous person and the qualities that for you make him great. 2. Discuss to your reader why chose the subject of your descriptive essay. There are a number of topics that can be used in writing descriptive essay. Be sure to mention your reason to the reader so they may also be interested in the subject of your descriptive essay. 3. Describe your subject meticulously and comprehensively. Focus on the minute details of the subject. Start from the most prominent feature then you go down to the least prominent feature. After all, the goal of a descriptive essay is to create a vividly clear mental picture in the mind of the reader. 4. Do not restrict yourself to the sense of sight in writing descriptive essay . Your goal in writing descriptive essay is to write in a way that your readers can actually see, hear, smell or taste the subject of the descriptive essay.
