All essays are written for a purpose. The same is true for argumentative essay. Its purpose is to measure the student’s ability to conduct a diligent research on a subject matter, arrange the information that he has obtained, take a stand or position on the issue and defend his stand or position. Writing argumentative essays can be a bit complicated. Unlike other essays, it requires the students to have good reasoning and analytical skills in presenting his stand on an issue and defending his position. It is also difficult in the sense that it also requires the students to explain the arguments of the opposing views and refute or rebut the same. Despite its reputation of being complex and exhaustive writing argumentative essays can be fun and easy if you will follow these simple steps. 1. Choose a topic. Students are always more concerned the arguments and the proofs they need in an argumentative essay. In the process, they tend to forget that the topic is as important as the proof. For practical reasons, it is suggested that you should choose a topic that you are most familiar with. Do not attempt to write an argumentative essay about a topic that you have no knowledge about, otherwise, you will only have a very difficult time starting your essay. In writing argumentative essay, choose a topic that is new, fresh and winnable. Most students make the mistake of choosing topics on capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia which are not winnable and boring. You should be reminded that thousands of essays have been written on these topics and until now no solution has been reached. So, it is better to find new and fresh topics that your professors could be interested in. 2. Give a Good Title. The title should give an indication of what the whole argumentative paper is about without giving the details of the paper. The title should serve only to tease the readers. 3. Prepare a Clear Thesis Statement. In the Introduction, you should briefly discuss what your argumentative essay is about and explain why you think it is important for the readers to read your argumentative essay. Also, state your stand or position on the issue in the Introduction. 4. Organize your argument and present convincing proof. The body of the argumentative essays should be divided in at least three paragraphs where the student prepares at least two arguments in support of his position and 1 argument to refute the argument of the opposing view. It is the body which is the most important part of the argumentative essay because it shows the student’s ability in reasoning and argumentation. It is suggested that studies should cite the studies conducted by unbiased experts and opinion leaders as basis for his argument. 5. End with a Strong Conclusion. The Conclusion is your last chance to sway the mind of your readers. So you should end your essay with a strong statement. In writing argumentative essay , do not simply restate your stand and enumerate your arguments.
