Nothing is worse than going to the beach or hotel pool with an ugly, painful nail infection of the toe. These nasty infections provide for swelling and an awful looking poor toe or finger nail. There are many treatments and remedies for sufferers to try in their battle against nail fungus. In our discussion, we'll look at the common causes of nail fungus, what type of environment enables nail fungus, and the treatment options available for nail fungus. Simply put, Onychomycosis, is a condition whereby fungus resides underneath the toe and is embedded around the nail edge. As with any fungus or infection, the proper environment can certainly enhance its survivability. If you think about it, the nail provides the perfect enclosed "greenhouse", for a nice, warm and cozy environment for the fungus that is being propagated. Yea, it may sound crazy, but the greenhouse analogy makes a lot of sense. Plants thrive better in a climate controlled environment; thus, a fungus will also thrive in a climate-controlled environment. Nail fungus can even be worse for those that live in a warm, humid climate. The first signs of a nail fungus begin with the discoloration of the nail. Nail fungus typically starts with a pale yellow shade on the surface. However, for those of us who have suffered through nail fungus, many have experienced green or even white colored nails. As the fungus worsens, the nail becomes even brittle and flaky. My infection occurred with the nail of my large toe and started with a black color, only to finish in a white hard, brittle surface with several undulations in my nail's contour. My lifestyle provided for the optimal condition for nail fungus. I live in a warm climate, and i'm an avid hour-long runner per day. My running shoe provided the perfect oven for a nail fungus infection. I tried creams and other pharmacy ointments with little success, and none showed consistent results. After about a year, the diseased nail peeled off a new nail grew into place. I just wish i had a product that would better have treated my nail fungus. So what are our options for treatment? Doctor's treatment is one option. There are prescription and oral medications available, however, cost is an issue along with potential side effects. Those taking prescription medications are frequently not covered by insurance. Further, because of the nature of the medication, some people must have regular blood tests taken to ensure that the drug doesn't have an adverse reaction to organs within the body. Surgery is also an option, however, surgery is by nature an invasive procedure and involves the removal of the nail coupled with a longer recover time. Topical treatments also work for some. However, for a topical treatment to be effective, the anti-fungal agent must be strong enough to kill the infection and the anti-fungal must penetrate through the nail into the fungus. There are several over-the-counter and several online treatment options such as Pur Nail that effectively treat nail fungus. It seem the better treatments for nail infections are purchased either in a health store or more easily online. Finally, there is no substitute for proper hygiene.
