Taking care of your furniture is not as difficult as most people make it sound. When buying furniture you want to keep the size of the room you are buying for in mind. Sometimes a piece of furniture can be just an inch too big and that throws the whole room off. Finding the right furniture for any room décor is important. Marble-top pieces are meant to be in the bathroom or kitchen; they can handle the effects of water and moisture as well as oak. Pinewood in a kitchen is weak and has a higher chance of becoming warped or damaged. Storing furniture in a non-humid and dry place is a must. Wood is very susceptible to the effects of the weather. In the summer, wood expands and in the winter it retracts. This change in temperature can result in your wood splinting and even bubbling. If you are worried about the environmental conditions of your room or house invest in a dehumidifier. Those can make all the difference. Clean and maintain your furniture. Dust and other particles settle on the surface and in cracks of wood. These are not only eyesores but can also be breeding grounds for bacteria and other germs. Use furniture polish and hot soapy water in very limited amounts. Too much water can damage the wood beyond repair. Don’t paint your furniture - particularly wood such as oak or pine. These woods do not need to be painted and painting them can lead to them being damaged. Always stick with wood vanish for your more sophisticated woods. If you buy a piece of furniture and don’t like the finished vanished coating or paint, paint thinner and wood stripper is an option. Just apply a few coats, watch the coating on the wood bubble and then scrape off. This can be tricky - don’t force the coating to come off, in time it will simply peel off with each scrape. If you try and force it you can scratch the wood in the process. Remember your furniture can be an investment, so don’t let the condition or the care of it slip. A well cared for piece of furniture can stay with you and your family for many, many years. Fleur de Lys specialise in Furniture Bristol and Cheap Living room furniture
