Depressions occur in young and old, poor and rich…in everyone. Usually, women are considered to suffer from depression more than men but as a whole, depression is one of the most popular diseases. Depressions are among the most frequent mental disorders. You should not think that you are the only one affected by depression and that all the other people are in perfect metal condition. Depressions affect thinking, feelings, behavior and even the physical condition. The most obvious sign of any depressive mood is the negative and pessimistic thinking. Depressed people are obsessed with negative thoughts and blame themselves. They think that their life is meaningless and believe that they will never be happy or healthy. Result of these negative thoughts is strong negative feeling. The concentration of depressed person is impaired and he/she has difficulties in remembering. Depressed people feel not only sadness that comes with the loss of a loved one. Grief is an adequate response to a loss and after a certain time they overcome it. But when there is depression, the grief lasts a long time and enhance over time. Feelings become more distressing and paralyzing. There can be also feelings of guilt and inferiority, which are prevalent and oppressing. The lack of desire is getting greater. Feelings of joy and satisfaction languish and on their place come aversion and meaninglessness. There may even occur feelings of fear: fear of the future, fear that you will never be healthy again, of being rejected by family members, etc. There is an inner restlessness that may lead to severe anxiety, may hinder the depressed person. He/she feels agitated and restless. Depressed people do the things very hard and with great difficulties. They need more time to finish their work and they often postpone their tasks. They abandon previous hobbies and interests because they do not feel pleasure anymore. Depressed people do not have energy. They can either sleep bad or need much sleep. They eat more than the other people or have lack of appetite. They lose desire for sex. There may occur also a number of bodily complaints such as headaches, stomach aches, pain in the back or heart. If you are depressed you have many different problems. You have strong feelings of guilt and inferiority. You do not want to see your friends, your concentration is bad, you cannot sleep normally, etc. That’s why you should view these symptoms as separate issue and start solving your problems one by one. If you suffer from excessive feeling of guilt, then view it as a separate problem and try to cope with it. If you do not try to do anything to improve your condition, it may get worse. So take care of yourself and try to cope with all the bad feelings. Some people can get out of a depression pretty easily, almost as easy as they came in that state, while others may need the help of a specialist, like a psychotherapist (or psykoterapeut as we call them here in Denmark).
