Ask the average guy at your gym who wants to get bigger and odds are he will tell you to do lots of sets and reps like he does. Look at him though. He's not that big. Even worse, you probably do workouts similar to his and you're not big either. There are better, faster, more efficient ways to get bigger, leaner, and stronger. The more often you lift weights, the more your weights need to be heavier in order to get results. In the beginning, you could get bigger and stronger if you just lifted a decent weight. It was something you could throw up fifteen to twenty repetitions in a set. That's light. If you're a regular at the gym, you need to lift heavier to get pack on size and build up strength. This would be a weight you could lift eight times in a set. During a usual workout where you lift a few sets of each exercise, one does two to five repetitions in a set. That is an issue. Not even Jay Cutler could lift near his max every exercise of every workout without burning out or hurting himself. How do you overcome this? Lift fast. If you're trying to increase size, lifting fast activates more of the muscle fibers that help you grow. If you want to be leaner, lifting fast increase your heart rate and metabolism. Lifting fast with a heavy weight uses more muscle fibers than lifting slower with a lighter weight. Doing so exhausts your muscles fast as well. Once your muscles have quit on you, you are reduced to struggle with weight your muscles are not up to lifting. The key is to end your set before you reach that point. When the speed of your repetitions slows and your form changes to the point where you have to cheat, it is time to end the set. The conventional wisdom is that you do a certain amount of sets and reps but it is not worth it if you are quivering and shaking through the last reps. You should focus on the total amount of reps for each exercise and let the sets take care of themselves. Say you are doing a workout like Bill Starr's 5x5. That is twenty five reps total. While you might not be able to do the twenty five in five sets your goal is to get twenty five no matter how many sets it takes. Work your biggest muscles. Bench, squats, deadlifts, pullups work all of the major muscles and is all you need.Want to learn how to pack muscle on in time for this summer? Check out www.howtogetabeachbody.com.
