Become a plumber: necessary skills

Career,Self Improvement,Advice
So, you are wondering if you may aspire to get a job as a plumber. Before you start researching plumber training, you ought to know what this trade may require you to do, the tasks you will need to perform and the skills you must have.

What jobs does a plumber have

The job description of a plumber will include installing, fixing and maintaining plumbing systems. For instance, you might get to look after chilled water, heat, steam, sewage and drainage systems. These might include industrial, commercial and domestic plumbing systems.

You will get to inspect heaters, sinks, tanks, pumps, pipes, commodes, joints and valves to figure out what’s malfunctioning or broken, in order that you get to repair or exchange these things as required.

You will need to be capable of reading blueprints, schemes and drawings to learn the layout of the system, and also to learn positions of pipes connections and other fixtures.

The work has to require using a selection of specialist plumbing tools, like pipe cutters, threading disks, reamers etc.

You have to be aware that you may find yourself working in bad lighting, small spaces, dirty spaces, big heights, hazardous materials (for example, acid), and you might find yourself drenched in scalding and cold water rather frequently.

However, as well as the physical skills you've got to have in order to do the job, you will also have to memorise the legal requirements of plumbing; you've got to memorise safety laws, and to make certain that your work answers all the necessary legal processes.

What other qualities may you need to have to turn into a great plumber?

The job description of a plumber will certainly require a mix of brains and physical skills.

Your hands may get dirty, and you must be okay with that fact. A head for heights might also be necessary, as well as the ability to lift up and carry around heavy things. You must be willing to climb into tight spaces and do your work there, for example, in tiny cellars, under sinks and behind washing machines. You’ll need to have a skill to use a multitude of tools safely and properly, so being generally good with your hands is a must for each aspiring plumber.

In addition, you've got to have a great skill and initiative to solve problems: believe me, you'll need it when you’re stuffed under a sink with freezing water gushing in your face. You have to be quite flexible, as there are a great many plumbing systems you’ll have to know. A sound judgement and a mind which is open to unusual solutions will also will serve you well.

Most of all, you’ll require a good work ethic, be scrupulously honest and very professional, because your reputation with clients is of the most importance for your plumbing career.

To summarise, plumbing is a very skilled trade, so your plumbing training is going to take some serious effort. But it can also be very rewarding and well-paid, because good tradesmen are always in demand. Everybody needs plumbers, you know?
