Cowboys & Aliens is a weird fusion of a genre from the past, as Westerns are usually set somewhere in the late 1800s and not something that we think of as futuristic. The blending together of the two does not always work and that is because the first scene that deals with shoot them up gunfights, bar fights and more is so well done and choreographed that what comes later cannot hold a candle to the start. You can compare it to From Dawn to Dusk when everyone thought they were fine and had taken safe refuge until they realized the people were not who they thought they were or seemed to be. The opening of the movie is great and sets the tone for the rest of it. This film that Steven Spielberg executive produced we see completely barren desert landscape in Absolution, New Mexico with not a trace of human life. Suddenly Daniel Craig who plays Jake Lonergan comes out of a deep sleep. He sees a gadget attached to his wrist and the realization hits him that he has lost his memory. Does not remember his name, his lover or where he is from. He enters town in time to save people from being robbed by Percy Dolarhyde the son of the wealthy land baron played by Harrison Ford. Through a series of flashbacks Jake learns his identity and faces Woodrow Dolarhyde (Ford) like it was a remake of High Noon. When the UFO’s come, the bullets are useless and they need to round up everyone including former foes like the Apaches and even rival gangs so that Jake can try and save the world with his magic bracelet, by taking out the flying object and pulverizing the huge ten foot aliens. Because of the combination of Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford the box offices will be full. Ford’s character is a menace and good for nothing while Craig’s character is the only one with the possibility of saving New Mexico. Once the cowboys begin to fire at the aliens with revolvers as well as shotguns, then the movie changes genre to a regular old zombie film, with heads getting shot off, blood gushing all over the place. Still not until the gorgeous Ella Swenson played by Olivia Wilde, whose character for the majority of the movie is unknown takes action and then all bets are off, no one is safe. The movie is directed with some super special effects. The movie starts too fast and cannot hold itself up through the middle and much less in the end. The shoot-out in the beginning ended the best part of the movie after just the first twenty minutes. The cast of actors is exceptional and the storyline is a good try but the movie lacks a lead actor to go to and let the rest follow. This attempt of combing the genre of the past with that of the future just does not work out well. Watch Movies Online
