Are you Talking to Me? How to Interview your Interviewer

Career,Business Opportunities,Business
Have you ever gone home after an interview and have someone say to you “How did your interview go?” You reply, “Good.” And then the questions begin…” Do you get benefits? What is your supervisor like? How much vacation are they offering? Do you get your own office?” And you realize you don’t know the answer! This happens all too often. We get so caught up in preparing ourselves for the interviewers questions that we fail to ask our own. Asking questions is important for a couple reasons; a) you probably want to know the answers so you can accurately evaluate the opportunity at hand and b) it shows the interviewer that you are taking the opportunity seriously. There are some rules that, when followed, can help you get the answers you need and keep you away from some taboo subjects: If you wouldn’t bring it up on a first date, don’t bring it up in the first interview: You wouldn’t ask someone how much money they make on a first date. The money talk is best left until the latter stages of the interview process. You need ample time to prove that your skills, personality and drive command a higher salary. Mystery up front will give you leverage when it comes time to close the deal. In addition, other topics that are potential points of discrimination should be avoided, things like religion, sexual orientation or marital status are best left alone. Keep your questions open ended: Questions that begin with how, what or describe will yield more in depth answers because it leaves the topic wide open. These questions put the interviewer in a position to formulate the answer all on their own and answers tend to encompass a broader spectrum of information. Have your questions prepared and make sure they are relevant: You don’t want to ask the Regional Vice President of a publicly traded company how many employees they have. This is public information, do your homework. Interviews are nerve wracking and nerves can cause you to clam up or ramble. Neither is good in an interview, so have your questions prepared ahead of time. This way you will appear organized and remain in control of the question and answer period. Prepare your questions in a one paged document that you can bring in the same folder or portfolio as your resume. Type them up and organize them in a logical fashion. Do NOT give this document to the interviewer, simply use it as a cheat sheet. This may seem self explanatory, but you would be surprised by what I have seen.

Below are some sample questions to get you started. Each position will require a different set of questions, so you’ll want to formulate your own as well.

• Describe the corporate culture here • Walk me through an average day in this position. • Tell me about the person who has been most successful in this role. • What background do most people in this role come from? What was their previous professional experience? • What is the average tenure for someone in this position? • Tell me about the career path this position leads to within your organization. • Tell me about your background (if speaking to potential direct manager) OR • Tell me about the direct manager for this position’s background • What is the team leader’s management style?
