Portable generators are machines that produce electricity and are used to provide electrical power in remote locations or in the event of a power outage. Nowadays, many people are choosing to purchase portable generators for recreational use (camping, recreational vehicles, outdoor activities, tailgating, etc) or to have one on hand at home to keep their household running if the power goes out. During an extended power outage, a portable generator is the lifeline for electricity. Proper maintenance and usage of a portable generator is essential to keep it running during a power outage. Mistreatment or overuse of the generator can cause it to malfunction or break, leaving you without power and in the dark. A portable generator can last the duration of an outage and many years to come if you follow some simple maintenance tips and guidelines. Always be mindful of what you are powering when using a portable generator. A generator can only support a limited amount of electrical devices so you want to be careful not to overload it. The potential damage that can occur to an overloaded portable generator includes blown fuses or damage to the electrical devices connected to it. A good way to prevent overload to a portable generator is to only use electronics that are absolutely essential during the power outage. When deciding on where to place a portable generator, you should always place it outside at least 10 feet away from any windows or doors. This will help prevent carbon monoxide buildup, as well as reduce the noise that the generator produces when running. It is also very important to never to operate a portable generator in wet conditions as it could short circuit or cause electrocution. If possible, place it underneath a canopy-like structure. Portable generators are designed with receptacles that you can plug appliances directly into it. You can also use a heavy duty extension cord that is approved for outdoor use if you need to power appliances farther away. You should never attempt to wire a portable generator into your main power supply unless you have an automatic transfer switch, as it could cause a fire or electrocution when the power is restored. When it is time to refill a portable generator with fuel always remember to turn off all connected appliances, turn off the generator, and wait for it to cool before refilling. Refilling the portable generator while it is still hot could cause a fire. Once filled, make sure the electrical appliances connected to it are off before restarting the portable generator. Like any mechanical device or machine, a portable generator must be properly maintained for it to work effectively during a power outage. It is best to run a portable generator at least twice a month for at least 15 minutes at a time. Make sure to connect it to electrical appliances which will take up at least 50 percent of its capacity to make sure it is still functioning properly. To keep a portable generator in optimal operating condition, you should regularly change the oil, empty the carburetor float bowl and fill the tank with new fuel each year after the storm season.
