Big things are a happening in the penultimate offering in the Twilight Saga. Edward and Bella get married, she falls pregnant on their honeymoon in Brazil then almost dies before she gives birth. Then after four movies spread over around 490 minutes of palpable desire and the kind of restraint afforded by superhumans, Bella wakes up with the red eyes that distinguish her as a vampire. This isn't a spoiler as the vast majority of people who go to see these movies have read the books and quite frankly there is so little else going on between these events in Breaking Dawn-part 1 that this review would be finished by now. Slow isn't the word for this movie, you can almost hear the seconds ticking by, not that this will matter to the Twilight devotees who have trawled through the 754 pages of this final tome. When everyone heard that the decision had been made to split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two halves there was much cynicism about the fat cats at the studio milking as many dollars as they could out of the series before it drew to a close. Once released, the talk quickly stopped, and that the extensive content vilified the two movies. Why they decided to do this with Breaking Dawn part 1 however has to be the aforementioned milking, as there simply isn't enough content to warrant two movies. This first part feels as padded and bloated as Bella looks during her burgeoning pregnancy. This criticism is merely a matter of personal opinion however and will make no difference at all to the people who are counting down the days to its release. The wedding takes place in a pretty, woody setting and Edward Cullen and Bella Swan make their heartfelt vows, no 'til death do us’ part malarkey obviously. This is a pleasant enough ceremony but it by no means is strong enough to be stretched out to over 30 minutes of screen time. Despite the gaiety there is the obligatory sense of foreboding as befits a vampire marrying a human. Once they are have been pronounced man(?) and wife they jet off to Rio, like you do. There is so little seen of it however that it seriously doesn't justify the location budget. We see them skinny dipping to some incredibly insipid movie, all gentle tenderness and then it cuts to the morning and the bedroom is a wreck, so we it totally cuts out that final moment when Bella submits, after the hours of build up that we have suffered. There was no need for anything graphic or distasteful but come on, Edward has been the perfect gentleman all this time while Bella has been a maelstrom of burning desire, and the moment when she succumbed to that desire could have been a beautiful highlight in this turgid movie, but no, we are robbed of that all important moment. Breaking Dawn is what it is, Twilight devotees will love it, and all the bad reviews in the world won't stop them flocking to see it in their droves.
