December 2, 2011 News: Bamboo, this rarely associated with Africa of plants, could become the continent's most important alternative energy, in the prevention of soil degradation and large-scale deforestation has played a key role. African countries in cooperation with the International Bamboo and Rattan, work hard to use bamboo firewood and charcoal to alternative wood fuel. Currently, in sub-Saharan Africa, 80% of the rural population is using wood as the primary fuel of life. This effort has been noticed, Ethiopia and Ghana has been the development of bamboo biomass as their national renewable energy policy priorities, which also led to interest in other African countries, driving more investment in the production of charcoal. As a green bio-fuels, charcoal can play to reduce deforestation and slow climate change of the role. "Bamboo is a good grass biological resources, it is natural growth, located on the African continent, is a good applicability, clean, sustainable fuel, which can replace wood firewood." Director General of INBAR old Dr. Jane (Dr. J. Coosje Hoogendoorn) today in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP17)that hold by South Africa in a side meeting, pointed out that, "If there is no such alternative energy, home energy will continue to charcoal-based in coming decades, it will bring disastrous consequences." Burning wood serious impact on the climate. Scientists predict that by 2050, African households use wood fuel will produce 6.7 billion tons of greenhouse gases, leading to the tropical rain forest area reduced, further accelerating climate change. Extensive use of wood fuel will cause damage to people's health. It is estimated that two million people killed each year in the world(mostly women and children) due to inhalation of smoke produced by burning wood. If charcoal as family fuel to continue widely used in the indoor, to the 2030 will lead to as many as 10 million people early death. INBAR's "Bamboo: Sustainable biomass" project, is the first introduced China's bamboo charcoal technology to sub-Saharan Africa of the project, Committed to using local bamboo resources to promote sustainable green biofuel production. This kind of project but also in India and Nepal. As for energy, health and food security, climate change, growing concern, the project get the European Union (EU) and the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) subsidy. Bamboo is the world's fastest growing plants, one can produce large amounts of biomass, so it is an ideal energy raw materials. In the tropics, bamboo can become useful in just three years, while the wood is 20 to 60 years. Whole bamboo, including its dry, branches, roots, can be used to produce charcoal, a high efficiency of resource use.
