Today, when issues of the accelerating climate change come at a greater level, it seems significant to think of taking steps towards decreasing our global carbon dioxide emission. Since lighting contributes 5%-10% (some even say 25%) to the standard electricity bill of the developed world, it sounds a good idea to try to reduce the energy consumption of our incandescent light bulbs. In addition, a significant pressure comes from the government's side to make us change our practices and try something else. While the solution already exists, we still hesitate. However, it is probable that we do not even think about that change is affordable and rewarding, and that it will leave some money in the pockets at the end of every month. There are some facts about the incandescent light bulbs that would convince you. - The electricity utilized over a lifetime of a single incandescent light bulb costs from 5 to 10 times more than the cost of the bulb.
- Changing one light bulb can spare some $12 per year.
- Professionals estimated that if two of the incandescent bulbs were replaced in all of the US based households and they were run 5 hours a day, it would save 23 million tons of carbon dioxide.
- This means that the energy demand could be decreased by the amount of 11 coal-heated power stations and it would save up to $1.8bn.
What is the solution? I'm sure you have seen LED lights before. Those are the ones that are running in store windows to light the toys, from clothes to birds. They are even lighting the Christmas decoration of a nice festive fair by snaking around the Christmas tree and all the stands. These are all LED bulbs. Every one of these bulbs needs 70% less carbon dioxide and produces the same amount of light as an traditional light. Some more advantages of the LEDs: - LED bulbs last 10 times longer than the CFLs and way longer than the incandescent bulbs.
- Since LEDs do not have a filament, they are not damaged under circumstances when a conventional incandescent bulb would be over. Because they are solid, LED bulbs hold up well to jarring and bumping.
- LEDs do not produce heat so they do not contribute to the heat build-up of a room. Thus, they do not hurt the efficiency of the air conditioning systems.
- No mercury is used for manufacturing LEDs.
- LED bulbs use 1/3rd or 1/30th of energy compared to incandescent bulbs or CFLs.
- LEDs are cost-effective. However, a decade ago their initial price was higher than for conventional bulbs, as the LED industry grows, production gets mass therefore cheaper. Not to mention the maintenance expenses that are far lower than for traditional bulbs.
- Because of their low energy consumption, LEDs are portable. Therefore they can be used to light remote areas as well.
So why would people say no to these LED bulbs? Money is not a reason and there is not more that is worth to mention. The answer is simply that they do not know about this opportunity. However, the media started to write some articles about the topic, it was forgotten at some point. Now it's time to dust it again.
