Protecting and helping people, security officers are the direct target for theft prevention. Working on a variety of tasks including standing watch on property and examining it, they are also protecting against open flames, terrorism, theft and criminal activities. Security officers tend to be the first in the area to defend their employer’s property, prevent criminal actions and assure that laws are taken seriously on the home and property. Required security training is the starting point towards becoming a future secuirty guard.

A Typical Day

Utilizing radio and telephone devices, security guards spend their time on duty equipped to ask for backup in the event of a fire or emergency medical condition. Any incident that occurs on every shift is written down in a log book or written in a thorough document that highlights their findings and the activities that happened in their shift. At specific areas, security guards may need to question witnesses or perhaps testify in a courtroom.

Although the role can certainly be put in basic terms, the size and location of the company can establish what duties a security guard will be expected to perform everyday. This range of duties is normally answered during security training. Many malls and movie theaters in recent years have chosen to employ a protection team to monitor the parking lots and protect customers from theft. In a mall, a security officer may help in apprehending shoplifters and defending the daily monetary deposit. On the other side of the spectrum are the security officers trusted with protecting a house. They may be required to monitor closed-circuit television surveillance cameras or walk around the premises at nighttime. Security guards at these locations will need to know all of the frequent guests to the premises and get hold of criminal violators who do not belong there. Just like this position, security officers within a hospital or courtroom setting are often expected to screen inbound individuals and stop criminals from getting in. Using technological equipment and metal detectors, all these guards can check site visitors for explosives and firearms. Learning the Job

Each security officer experiences a time period of security officer training before they can begin their first day at work. Many states require that security officers be licensed before they start employment. Certification involves a criminal record check, classroom training, probable drug testing and an age requirement of 18. The training performed within the classroom will often cover how to deal with emergencies, home and property rights and the correct way to keep custody of a suspect.

In places that don't mandate such extensive training procedures, employers are usually the ones to ensure that each security officer is up to speed. Several businesses who hire unarmed guards have no particular schooling requirements, however a a bachelor's degree or higher can raise the chances of a potential employee getting the job. Armed guards in particular must have a driver’s license and a good work history. Since armed guards must have a gun during the workday, they need to be certified with the government and receive a special accreditation. Although these jobs require more responsibilites, they also tend to supply a higher level of pay.

Those who want a job and begin their security officer training can expect to undergo a background and fingerprint check. Applicants ought to be in shape and have a good personal reference. Right after they are on the job, the majority of companies will continue to give incoming guards specialized security officer training. Occupational Health and Safety

Security guards usually work 8-13 hour shifts 4 to 5 days a week.
