With the rapid rate of technological advancements to heavy-duty utility vehicles such as those sold at an equipment auction, there is an increasing amount of urgency for the battery to keep equipment operating as expected. As a good side effect, greater importance is being placed on periodic maintenance than ever before. Advancements in technology have also directly impacted the battery’s ability to maintain a charge, improve its performance, and increase its lifespan. The following information is a simple maintenance guide that is extremely effective in maximizing the performance of a vehicle’s power supply in order to maintain peak operating efficiency and have a longer lifespan. Maintenance Guide When it comes to heavy equipment, the main responsibility of an operator is to keep the vehicle fully functional and be sure it receives proper maintenance on a regularly scheduled basis. The failure to appreciate the value of the battery performance can be disappointing and expensive in the long run. No matter what utility vehicle is being used, it is imperative to follow certain guidelines to keep the battery in good shape so that it performs well and lasts for a long time. Safety – Working with batteries can be hazardous, so before performing any maintenance or other work involving the battery, proper safety precautions must be taken. Generally, jewelry should be removed and plastic gloves and goggles should be worn. There should be no smoking in the general area; any other types of sparks or flames should also be kept away to avoid an explosion. Last but not least, be sure to thoroughly wash the hands after any handling. Fluid Level – The water level in every cell should be checked on a monthly basis and operators should ensure that it is at the required level; over or under filling could have a negative effect on the battery so maintain it at the recommended level. Distilled water should be used rather than tap water to avoid harmful minerals that could damage the battery. Water helps keep batteries from corroding and may provide a longer service life. Monthly Cleaning – Prior to any cleaning procedure, the terminals should be disconnected from all of the posts. Avoid washing the battery without first neutralizing the entire area using baking soda. Ideally, approximately 2 to 3 ounces of baking soda should be mixed with one and one-half gallons of clear water and sprayed on the top, sides, wires, and racks. Let it soak for at least five minutes for the neutralization process to take place and then thoroughly rinse using a low-pressure spray of clean water while scrubbing with a bristle brush to remove any debris or deposits. Power Pack – Charging affects the performance and extends the service life of a battery. There is a question as to how often it should be recharged and the answer is relatively simple: a battery should be charged every time it runs low and should be at least 50 to 60 percent discharged before recharging to provide many years of reliable service. One important thing to keep in mind is to avoid allowing the power packs to completely drain or to charge for too long a period of time. With constant change and new product development, one thing that has remained the same is how a utility vehicle performs which would include its important components such as the battery. It will last much longer when a proper maintenance guide and schedule is followed. Refilling the fluid, regular cleaning and recharging are the three most essential things to enhance performance, extend its lifespan and avoid premature battery failure. Follow this maintenance guide and remember to always take proper safety measures when handling these power packs to avoid unnecessary risk and watch that battery last longer! Christopher M.
