Why squatting works ! My objective in producing this article is to provide information related to the natural practice of squatting to eliminate. In India, Africa, China, Far East countries, and Japan (two thirds of the world’s population) the vast majority of the population squat to eliminate. Although these cultures have a wide range of diets, diseases of the bowel are rare. Problems of most of the diseases of the bowel, are to do with what is NOT eliminated.
A small percentage of feces are left behind when we use the "sitting on the chair" posture. When we squat the closing of the Ileocecal valve, the opening of the puborectalis and the correct abdominal pressure is such that 100 percent of feces are eliminated. There is no fecal matter left to continue to produce harmful bacteria and some of the resulting diseases.
There are three different components involved when a human being squats to eliminate. A) The Ileocecal valve. B) The sigmoid colon: C) The Puborectalis Muscle: Evacuation is not 100% when we use “sitting on a chair” posture to eliminate. One very serious outcome is that a large majority of colon cancer sufferers, at some stage, have to resort to surgery. They then have to live with the results and quality of life is reduced considerably.
1) The ileocecal valve: The valve is shaped like a “mouth” and the only time it closes properly is when the RIGHT thigh pushes up against it when a person is in a squatting posture. The ileocecal valve, when fully closed, prevents any “washback” and keeps bacteria from entering into the small intestine. 2) The Sigmoid colon: The sigmoid colon is the lower part of the large intestine shaped almost like a “U” bend. Therefore, when you squat to eliminate, the LEFT thigh pushes against the underside of the sigmoid colon. It not only supports but also “tilts” the sigmoid colon to empty its contents in to the rectum. The sigmoid colon is where the majority of the colon cancers occur and by helping it to be completely empty, on a daily basis, ensures good health. The natural squatting posture to eliminate is therefore vital to maintaining the health of the whole of the digestive system. 3) The Puborectalis muscle: There is a muscle around the rectum called the Puborectalis. It resembles the elastic bands of a “sling”. The muscle starts at the pubic bone, goes around the neck of the anal canal and attaches again at the pubic bone. Its function appears to be one of holding the “solids” and allowing the “gas” to pass through when a person is standing, sitting or laying down. In a squat position, the Puborectalis. is at its most “released” position. This allows the rectum and the anal canal to open in line to allow complete evacuation.
It is only about 150 Years ago that we in the western world started to use the “Sit on toilets”. Over 2/3rd of the world’s population still uses the natural squatting position to eliminate; majority of this population seems to enjoy a much more healthy digestive systems. There are additional benefits when you use the squatting posture to eliminate. The posture “works” the hip joints, the knee joints and the ankles. Keeping these joints fully mobile, is also important for good health.
