Shorthand is the art of writing in a method that increases speed and brevity. It involves making use of symbols and figures to represents words, phrases or collection or words. The process of writing in shorthand is known as stenography. A person who is trained to make use of shorthand and uses it in the process of her professional life is called stenographer. Sometimes some organizations require stenographer in languages other than English. India is a country with almost all states having a language other than English as their official language. For example recently there was a job opening in State Bank of India for the role of Stenographer. For this SBI recruitment, there were 900 vacancies for English stenographer and 100 vacancies for Hindi Stenographer. The minimum educational qualification required is 10+2 or 12th pass with 60% marks. For candidates belonging to SC/ST category this limit is reduced to 50% or 55%. There are certain age requirements as well for this kind of role. The maximum age limit is normally 28 years, which is relaxed for candidates belonging to category according to the Government of India norms. The common method by which a Stenographer is recruited consists of a written test along with typing speed test followed by a personal Interview round. In most cases a candidate is only allowed to move to the next round once she clears the minimum requirements of the previous round. The written test consists of General Knowledge, Language Ability, Aptitude and Reasoning. A separate paper on basic computer knowledge is also included in some cases. For the typing speed test a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute (35 wpm) is generally required with 90% accuracy. Usual pay scale The starting pay scale for stenographer lies in the range of Rs. 5200-20200/- per month. For the job opening of SBI mentioned above the pay scale was starting from Rs. 7200/- going up to Rs. 19300/-. Usual mode of application For persons who desire to get the job of a stenographer, it is always advisable to follow the leading employment newspapers. The other source of information is the official websites of Government organizations. Humanly it is not possible for a person to keep track of all the sites of various companies and departments. In such cases websites providing information on Government jobs come in handy. The mode of application for this kind of role can be in two ways: 1. Online method 2. Offline method The online mode of application can again be done in two ways a. Registering and applying using the official portal of the concerned organization b. Sending an email along with the application and other relevant documents to the email id provided by the recruiter The offline mode of application consists of sending the duly filled in application form in a prescribed format along with the attested copies of other relevant documents to the address provided in the information bulletin.
