International Women's Day - March 8 The role of a Woman throughout the history of mankind has been of the person who brings balance and peace. March 8, also celebrated as International Women's Day is a celebration of being a woman. Be it the role of a home-maker or a business professional, women have proved their equality with men. But often while performing this balancing act, women neglect their health. • The average female life expectancy in India is low compared to many other countries • Maternal mortality in India is the second highest in the world • According to a UNDP Human Development Report in 1997, 88% of pregnant women (age 15-49) were found to be suffering from anemia. These are just a few indicators about the fact that it is time that women started paying more attention towards their wellness. DesiDieter has listed articles intended to aid women face common challenges and also some ways to relieve themselves of these challenges: • Family Stress The woman of the household has the onus of balancing the whole family's needs and this can become stressful at many times. • Are you Sleep Deprived? There are two stages of sleep: 1. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) - contributes to mental consolidation 2. Non-REM - Aids physical repair and rebuilding During a typical night, one alternates between the above two stages approximately 4-5 times. Insufficient number of hours of sleep contributes to: • Mental irritability due to lack of REM sleep • Physical tiredness due to lack of non-REM sleep ATHLETES: You need to bear in mind that in case you are a runner, your body needs an extra hour of sleep to repair any running related tissue/cell damage. • Skin care Skin is a part of the body just as the liver, heart and kidneys. When the flow of blood is hindered to the skin for any reason, the skin hardens, thickens and loses its normal appearance. As you grow older in years. the circulation of blood to the skin is lessened and it loses its youthful appearance; its color changes and wrinkles begin to form on its surface. The speed of aging starts at 25. It is slow between 30 to 35, fast between 35 to 50 and very quick between 50 to 65. But you can cheat the calendar and preserve your youth by giving your skin regular care and attention both from within and without. • Smoking in Pregnancy and Effects on the Child For so many years now, smoking has been a part of our lives, regardless of whether we smoke or not. And for that it has been a detrimental factor in everybody's lives; sad to say, that includes the unborn babies. Cigarette smoke alone is full of chemicals, some studies even state that it has more than 2,500 chemicals. Some chemicals like tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine were considered as the most dangerous substance for the fetus. It has long been proven how these chemicals can greatly affect the development of the fetus inside the mother's womb. • Yoga to reduce Wrinkles and Aging The most common definition of aging is not what really determines it. In reality, misusing our bodies over a long time causes the body to degenerate and consequently look older. Yoga helps in making you feel younger. If there is any key to longer life, it is none other than Yoga. It not only helps in preventing skin infections but also helps in bringing luster to the skin, reduce wrinkles, and improve the tone. • Prevent Stress with Ayurveda Stress is the disruption of homeostasis and physical or psychological stimuli. It has physical and emotional effects on us and may have negative influences, resulting in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression, which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Instead of stress reduction, ayurveda, which means the science of life, prescribes a series of stress-prevention techniques. While stress reduction assumes that we must first incur the stress and then figure out a way to reduce it, stress prevention is a way of life that doesn't require a huge time commitment and aims not to allow stress to affect us in the first place. Our modern world has done a good job of disconnecting us from these natural cycles. Ayurveda, on the other hand, suggests a lifestyle in harmony with them. Once you experience what it is like to live with the cycles, it becomes a way of life. Unlike most diets or stress-reduction techniques, stress prevention is a way of life that you will look forward to.
