Leaders need to be listening to their indicators? Many business professionals treat their roles in companies as if they are operating in a bubble. They make decisions about how to solve a situation or improve productivity, and fail to adapt when the coin lands tails instead of heads like they expected. When working with people, any decision you make will produce a unique result, and if you're not listening then opportunity will pass you by. Every day something changes. If you think they don't then you're fooling yourself. Indicators, reports, productivity, moods, market, client-relations, opportunities..etc. the goal is not to be on guard all the time, or even to captain an unwavering ship - it is to be flexible enough, and to listen closely enough to adapt on a daily basis, even when executing a big decision. Leadership requires knowing that it is erroneous to approach a strategic decision as a single play. Instead, think a couple plays ahead, much like a quarterback on first down. You may have an idea of what your next three plays will be, but if you don't have other options, then you're liable to get surprised or blind-sighted, and ultimately your progress will come to a halt. However, if you are listening to results play by play, and prepared with some alternative tactics, you may just exceed your initial goals by taking advantage of an opening or improving performance mid-play. Furthermore, if you keep your team prepared for mid-game changes, then the possibilities become even more profound. There are some organizational politics that will play into this that you must also keep an eye out for when doing this. Keep your eye on the coin - it makes it more fun, too. Each day at work can become an exercise in living game-systems. There are very rewarding prospects in each aspect of a professional life, whether it be for promotion, a raise, improved performance and experience, or just a plain-old better time. There are bottom lines in business, and identifying the threshold and meeting those targets is about survival - to excell, to thrive, to command and conquer, you must be creative and always have your eyes and ears peeled for the coin flip, because the next one may just be your big break.
