You've gotten an estimate for new carpet, only to find that the installer charges a ridiculously high fee to remove your old worn carpet. Never fear; you can easily remove the old flooring yourself with minimal labor and a short amount of time. Tearing up carpet is an easy job, but requires a lot of manual labor. You can do the job with household items, and alone, but you'll have to be careful because it can get dangerous and a bit messy. Tools Required To tear up your carpeting, you will need a hammer, pliers, scissors and a sharp knife. The hammer and pliers will be used to remove staples and nails holding down the carpet, and any leftover after the job is done. The scissors and knife will be used to cut up your carpet into pieces for easier removal from the floor and carrying out of the house. Getting Started Simply remove anything holding the carpet to the floor including furniture, staples and nails, find a loose corner, and then start pulling away from the wall. You may have to remove staples and nails during this process. In the edges next to walls, you may find tack strips, which are placed there to help secure the carpet to the ground. Tack strips can be left if you plan to carpet your floor again; if not, they can be removed. Important Things To Remember Staples and nails are usually used to keep the carpet sticking to the ground, so be sure to pull them up before and after you tear up your carpet for easier removal and safety purposes. You will want to cut up your carpet into smaller pieces with your scissors or knife, especially for bigger rooms because carpeting is heavy and will be easier to move in smaller pieces. Old carpet padding should also be removed because it will have collected a lot of dirt and will be worn out after such long use. Cleaning Your Floor After you've torn up your carpet, you will likely find a fairly dirty and dusty floor, so use a broom and dustpan to pick up and dirt and dust, then use a mop with hot water and soap to clean up any grime, finally, rinse the mop out and mop again, but with just warm water this time. Remove all furniture if possible. If you can't empty the room completely, place everything in one area and work in one side of the room at a time. Starting in a corner, pull the carpet away from the wall. It will be secured by a thin strip of wood called a tack strip. If you are having new carpet laid you can leave the tack strip for reuse; if you're replacing the carpet with hardwood or other flooring it may be pried up with a screwdriver.
