Toasted sandwiches are wonderful and are something that can be consumed as a mainmeal, as part of a main lunch or as a feast at any time of the morning. Toasted sandwiches are versatile and there is a toasted sandwich for every person. Typically, there are four different ways you can toast a sandwich, as follows; 1) Using the grill of a conventional cooker All cookers have a grill therefore you don't need any extra kitchen related gadgets in order to make a toasted sandwich, and this is the largest benefit. When you use the grill of a conventional kitchen stove the heat source is on top of the toasty, which means you can only cook one side at a time. It is possible to vary the hotness of a standard cooker grill, which means you can have the sandwich as well done as you could do with. This means you can have the bread lightly coloured, well done or anything in between, which is another benefit on making toasted sandwiches this way. 2) Using a griddle When you cook a toasted sandwich using a standard cooker you place the sandwich down from the heat source. When using a griddle to make a toasty the sandwich is placed on top of the heat source, yet this method still works very well. In order to put a stop to the sandwich sticking to the griddle you can either apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the griddle or you can put on a small coating of butter or margarine on the outside of the sandwich. Spreading a small dusting of butter or margarine on the bread really enhances the flavour however it does increase the fat content of the toasty. 3) Using a sandwich press A sandwich press consists of two hot plates that the sandwich is cooked between, which means the heat source is on top of and underneath the toasty. This is most fitting in that both sides of the toasted sandwich are evenly toasted at the same time. The biggest disadvantage in using a sandwich press is that the weight of the top plate is likely to "push" the filling out of the sandwich, which results in an awful mess. In order to prevent the sandwich sticking to the hotplates you can put on a small coating of butter or margarine on the outside of the bread or apply an itty-bitty oil on the hotplates. Most sandwich presses have a non-stick coating, however I still think it is most fitting to add some supplementary vegetable oil, just to make sure nothing sticks. 4) Using a toasted sandwich maker There are many benefits in making a toasted sandwich with a sandwich toaster therefore it is the best way to make a toasty in my opinion. A sandwich toaster nips the sides of the bread together, hence sealing it and preventing the filling from oozing out all through the toasting process and making a mess. A sandwich toaster alsodivides the toasted sandwich in to two 'sealed' halves which not only makes sure the toasty stayswarmer for longer but also makes it much cleaner to pick up and devour. A sandwich toaster only has two settings, which are off or on. A sandwich toaster gets warm enough to toast the bread and the filling, but not so hot that itburns. When using a sandwich toaster it is impossible to char the toasty, which means you don't have to keep an eye on it all whilst toasting. Since the sandwich toaster is a professional bit of kit you'd think it was costly, however this is not the case. Sandwich toasters are very cheap. In fact, a variety of sandwich toasters are less expensive than a griddle.
