Are Sprays and Baits Enough to Control Cockroaches

Health,Family & Parenting,Home Improvement
If you’re got a roach problem, try not to panic; instead, try some of these roach extermination tips. Whether you live in an apartment or a single family home, sometimes roaches can become a problem. Calling a professional extermination company can be expensive, so why not try some of these tips and see if you can’t handle the roaches yourself?

There are several things that you can do when you start to suspect you have a roach infestation. Sprays, baits, and traps are an option, as are some homemade remedies. Additionally, making sure your home is as inhospitable as possible to roaches will help prevent the problem from reoccurring. Handling the problem as soon as possible is important; not only are cockroaches yucky, they’re also thought to contribute to problems with asthma, especially among children.

Sprays

At your local grocery or hardware store, you can find several pesticide sprays that are suitable for killing roaches. Spray the pesticide along floorboards or any other crevices where roaches might be making their home. Don’t spray in areas where you store food, however, or in any spots where babies, children, or pets will be playing. Wear protective clothing when using sprays, such as long sleeves and pants, gloves, eye protection, and a mask. Make sure you read and follow the product directions carefully, store and dispose of the pesticides in an area where they won’t be a hazard, and wash your hands thoroughly after use.

Baits and Traps

If the idea of spraying poison around your home is distasteful to you, don’t worry; there are other, less toxic options that you can try. Placing roach bait, available in grocery and hardware stores, in areas where roaches are a problem is a very effective way of controlling roaches. Glue traps are another option. Consider placing glue traps around to determine where the roach population is most concentrated, then place bait only in those areas. Try to position the bait near cracks, crevices, and in the corners of cabinets or under the sink, all areas where roaches love to make their homes.

Home Remedies

You can make your own traps instead of buying commercially available ones. Simply take a plastic container, smear the sides with petroleum jelly, and then place a damp paper towel and some food at the bottom. Roaches will be attracted by the food and water but won’t be able to escape once they’re inside. Flush your captives down the toilet for easy disposal. Sprinkling Boric acid in powder form around areas where you tend to see roaches is another home remedy, although in damp, moist areas, this may be less effective.

Other Tips

In order to reduce the chances of getting roaches, it’s important to create an environment that isn’t attractive to them. Like all living things, cockroaches need food and water to survive, so keeping areas free of crumbs and other food debris, sealing storage containers well, keeping the sink clear of dirty dishes and water, and repairing any leaking or dripping plumbing will lessen their resources and hopefully prompt them to move onto green pastures. Sealing any cracks or crevices will eradicate the places they like to hide. Follow these tips and hopefully roach extermination won’t be in your future.
