Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp is a place of memory of far over one million murdered prisoners of the Third Reich. It was created to help in 'solving the problem' of overcrowded prisons keeping people considered to be dangerous and unwanted by Hitler. This factory of death started working in 1940. The initial camp of Auschwitz with 22 buildings got enlarged by next 8 ones, and additional camps in Birkenau and Monowitz. Prisoners were arriving to Auschwitz in sealed train carts, some have travelled many days without food, water and fresh air access. Huge portion of almost 80% of all arriving prisoners were killed during the initial selection. Germans wanted to keep only young and strong enough people who could be used to work. Nowadays Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau are opened for visitors. Museum is visited by 1400000 people each year. Often people visiting Camp get emotional seeing huge loads of confiscated belongings, even as personal and necessary as artificial limbs. Thanks to well organized museum exhibition, the experience is very realistic. Museum employs many tour guides, speaking a number of languages. In order to guarantee comfortable conditions of sightseeing, each of the visitor can use an audio system with headphones, this way everyone can hear tour guides voice loud and clear. The degree of the nightmare this place witnessed is hard to put in words. It should be visited by everyone just to picture the tragedy of war and hate and never to forget what a human is capable of doing to another one in the name of own, wrong beliefs. If you are planning a trip to Poland I can recommend you 2 places to visit - first of all take a Krakow tour, and then Auschwitz Birkenau tour.
