Important Factors for Consideration in Carpet Repair

Home Improvement,Fashion & Cosmetics,Family & Parenting
You try your best not to flinch as a party guest drops his fat, lit cigar on your expensive white rug, burning a sizeable hole, but it cuts you through your core and straight into your pocketbook. Before you call in the installers, there are ways that you may be able to do quick carpet repair on your own without having to open your wallet. See if any of the following steps work for you. First and foremost, relax. Repairing an area of damaged carpet is not that difficult, but you should be calm as you do it so that it ends up looking as flawless as possible.

First, check your storage and see if you have any leftover scraps from your carpet installation. Depending on how big an area you need to repair, you may have enough to do the repairs. If you don't have any pieces left, go into an area of your home where the carpet is installed but rarely seen, like a closet or a basement. Cut away a piece of the carpet there, and replace that hole with the damaged carpet fragment. Finally, if none of those options are possible, call your carpet manufacturer and see if your carpet is still being made. If it is, request a good number of sample pieces. On their own or stitched together, they may be large enough to repair the damaged area.

Determine the size of the area that needs to be repaired and outline it in chalk. Carefully cut along the chalk line with a utility knife and remove the damaged portion of carpet. Carefully clean the hole left by the cutout area until spotless. Make a replacement section out of the replacement carpet by placing it directly underneath the damaged carpet and cutting out an identical piece following the chalk line. Hot glue the replacement piece into the hole, and let it dry completely. The replacement carpet should be virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the carpet. If it's not seamless, pull some additional fibers from other pieces of scrap, and glue them into any visible lines that you see. You may want to place a heavy object on the carpet in order to press the replaced area down and help it blend. Take the damaged carpet piece, and place it into the space you took the replacement section from, and repeat the above steps.

If you're trying to remove a liquid stain, the first thing that a carpet installer will tell you is to not rub out a stain, but to try blotting it out. Take a clean, white cloth and blot the liquid slowly from the center of the stain and moving outward so that the stain doesn't set in permanently. When the area is dry, dampen the cloth with water and repeat the process, working your way from the center. Repeat until as much of the stain is removed as possible. If the stain remains, check with professional carpet cleaners and get their recommendations regarding stain removers. The key to all cleaning is proceeding with patience.
