Have you ever noticed that no matter how much time and effort you dedicate to caring for your skin there are times when it doesn’t seem to be enough and that wrinkles and fine lines are appearing right before your very eyes. Whether your problems are acne break outs, dry skin, or dull skin that lacks the luster of youth, chances are quite good that the culprit in question is ‘stress’ - especially if you are constantly making efforts to properly care for your skin. But does stress really affect how fast your skin ages? Well, you’re about to find out. We all react differently to the stress in our lives on one level but on another level our body’s response to stress is almost always the same. Unfortunately, that panic response that the body goes through during periods of stress does little to make the skin more attractive and much to make it less attractive. The problem is that not all stress is bad for you. The problem lies in finding balance between the good and bad stress or at least learning to control your body’s reaction to stress. The good news is that there are ways in which this can be accomplished. Yoga is one of the best methods for diminishing the impact that outside stress can have on your body in general and your skin specifically. How does uncontrolled stress impact the skin? 1 Produces excess adrenaline. The production of extra adrenaline in the blood stream takes the blood away from the skin sending it, and important nutrients elsewhere to deal with the crisis. The longer the crisis situation the greater the impact on your skin will be. 2 Break outs can be brought on by emotional turmoil. It doesn’t really matter if it’s excitement, anger, or frustration coursing through you, these intense emotions lead to the excess production of sebum and can lead to blocked pores and yucky skin. 3 Tense muscles lead to aged look in the skin. Stress often leads to the unintentional stiffening of the skin. When this happens, the natural waste removal techniques of the skin are impaired and the result is aged looking skin. 4 Hampered rejuvenation. When you are under a great deal of stress the dead layers of skin take longer to be sloughed away so that new, fresh, glowing skin can take its place. The result is skin that looks old. 5 Excess cortisol. The body produces extra cortisol when it is under stress. The result of this excess production of cortisol is a weakened line of defense for the skin to the impacts of the environment, which leads to skin that looks prematurely aged. Since you are now aware of the harmful effect that stress can have on your skin’s appearance you can make an effort to diminish the impact by learning to deal with stress in a proactive manner so that the effects are less than they would otherwise be.
