Amsterdam is a city known the world over. It is a city riddled and laced throughout with beautiful canals. Combined with its rich culture and attractions, Amsterdam is a great city to explore. Arriving and Accommodation Reaching Amsterdam from London couldn't be easier; a flight from London will take a little over an hour. The view approaching Amsterdam is worth the flight in itself as it is the best vantage point to view all the canals and harbour from afar. Once you've landed at the airport, quick and frequent trains will shuttle you to the central station of Amsterdam. Like most major cities, Amsterdam has more than enough choice of accommodation. At the lower end of the scale are the numerous hostels in the city centre, whilst many hotels can be found at more expensive, yet reasonable prices, throughout the centre of the city. Travelling Transport is also another unusual feature of Amsterdam; although the city is famous for its large number of bikes, getting around on foot is just fine. The city is well signposted and you can easily remember your way around the city centre. Walking around can also prove entertaining in its own right, as the city sports a unique style and atmosphere. The tall town houses lined against the canals offer a multitude of views, and more unique buildings such as Nieuwmarkt, or new market, offer exceptional examples of this unique architectural style. For more outlying locations, consider taking a boat. Numerous services offer a day's passage on boats that stop at various points along the city. Planning ahead, you can really take advantage of this opportunity to visit the more remote locations in Amsterdam whilst enjoying the ride along the canals. The tickets are often for an unlimited days travel, so don't be afraid to hop on and off throughout the day. Places to see One of the biggest attractions of Amsterdam is its history. Perhaps the most popular of which is Anne Frank's House. Although it has been renovated on the outside, the inside still contains much of the original structure, providing an interesting insight into Anne Frank and her most famous diary. This building often gathers long queues, so be sure to attend very early if you wish to visit. In terms of museums, Amsterdam has more than enough. Some of the more popular include the Heineken brewery, which shows the creation process of the world famous beer. The Van Gogh Museum and the Rembrant House Museum house a collection of works from Van Gogh and Rembrant respectively and are some of the most popular museums in the city. Events Amsterdam also has its fair share of festivals and events too. The Art Amsterdam festival takes place between the 9th and 13th of May, highlighting modern art. Between the 1st and 26th June, Holland Festival takes place across Amsterdam, highlighting music, arts, film, theatre, dance and more. Amsterdam's park, Vondelpark, also hosts an open air theatre throughout the summer. On the third weekend in June Amsterdam plays host to the Open Tuin Dagen, or Open Garden Days. A ticket is required to participate but the event allows you access to around 30 private gardens; a sight rarely seen amongst the tall rise town buildings of Amsterdam. As you can see, Amsterdam is a city full of culture and entertainment, set against the beautiful backdrop of its canal system.
