Dystopian movies are usually thought of having a theme that portrays a bleak future for the human race. The population is oppressed by some form of tyrannical ruling faction, either openly or in secret. Though a dystopian theme could be explained with a few words, each subcategory has it's own definition. THE HUMAN, OPEN DYSTOPIA - Ruled by a totalitarian government that functions much like a nation under martial law. Any who disobey the laws are punished without trial to the harshest extent imaginable. While only a handful of people at the top, in the governing body, can live in luxury, the rest of civilization is forced to live in misery and squalid living conditions. THE HUMAN, CLOSED DYSTOPIA (dark utopia) - A nation that, on the surface appears to be a thriving utopian society. It gives the ruse of freedom while enslaving it's people with drugs or mind control. The population is sometimes so brainwashed that they cannot comprehend anything other than what the propaganda tells them. [The above two are the most closely related to the dystopian theme, although many other movies have been thrown into this category as well.] ZOMBIE DYSTOPIA - This normally doesn't into this theme, although in some of the movies there is a safezone city that can be considered dystopian. POST APOCALYPTIC - Some of these types meet the requirements to make it a dystopian movie. After a worldwide disaster, the remaining survivors rebuild. The ruling of these new societies are usually very oppressive and dystopian. PLAGUE DYSTOPIA - The closest I can describe it is the movie The Stand. Seeing how Las Vegas turned out after a plague. MACHINE DYSTOPIA - Like the Matrix, where machines rule over the population without remorse. There may be more subcategories, though these are the most commonly associated with the theme of dystopian movies
