Urinary tract infection is a very common problem that occurs due to the short urinary passage and the injury can happen in the involvement in a sexual act in females. The males get urinary tract infection due to the abnormalities from birth in the urinary tract. Infections comes when the organisms goes to the bladder and the kidneys. The urinary tract has a collecting system in kidney, ureter, bladder and the urethra. The upper urinary tract consists of kidneys and the urethra and the lower one is of bladder and the urethra. The infections of the urinary tract can be caused due to the wrong instruments used in the hospital or in the community where bacteria’s are growing. The common symptoms of urinary tract infection is the pain while urinating, increased frequency of urination. Diagnosis: Urinary tract infection is present when there is pain while urinating and frequency of urine increases. The diagnosis of the urinary tract infection is done in a laboratory test which helps to decide which drug should be given. Treatment: Antibiotics can be given for the treatment of UTI and the choice of antibiotic depends on the lot of factors like the complication of UTI, its stage like primary or secondary, type of patient, male or female, pregnant or non-pregnant, person with hypertension or diabetes. Treatment for Uncomplicated UTIs: When the UTI is not complicated then the low risk UTI can be treated with three day curse of antibiotics without any lab test. The oral antibiotics gives relief from about 94% of UTI.The standard antibiotic for UTI consists of three day course of sulfamethoxazole, commonly called TMP-SMX (Bactrim, Cotrim, Septra).One day course of TMP-SMX can be given in mild infections.Quinolones can be given in areas that are resistant to TMP-SMX but this is not suggested for pregnant women. Nitrofurantoin (Furadantin, Macrodantin) can be given for longer durations say for more than three days treatment. Fosfomycin is suggested for pregnant females. Mostly these medicines give result after a week but if the problem still persists then a urine test is done to identify the organism that is causing the infection and the medicines are given accordingly. Home remedies: Increase the intake of fluid: The increased intake of fluid helps to wash out the organisms in the urinary tract that makes the pathogens difficult to stay near the human cells. Frequent urination: The bladder should be emptied as soon as possible as it helps to decrease the pathogens. Take cranberry juice: The juice of cranberry contains antioxidants that help to build up and increase the immunity. Take Pineapple: Pineapple contains bromelain that is anti-inflammatory in nature and reduces UTI. Take vitamin C: The bacterial growth is reduced with the intake of Vitamin C. Other methods: Yogurt, baking soda, Oregon grape root, and aromatherapy are also very good for the treatment of UTI. Alkaline mixture: The alkaline mixture helps to relieve the irritation that is caused in UTI. Personal hygine: The hygiene of personal parts is very important to cure the urinary tract infections.
