Mechanical engineering is a study field that covers a wide range of tools, topics, and techniques. Core Courses in Mechanical Engineering These courses comprised of subjects in the areas of computer, mathematics, and science. Several courses in mathematics is essential should you wish to pursue your dreams of becoming a mechanical engineer. You may take linear algebra and calculus in the first two years of your degree program. Taking up math-concentrated science classes like physics and chemistry is a requirement. Mechanical engineers should have solid foundation in the computers and other computer that are associated to computer and its applications. You need to take classes in the fields of digital design, computer-aided drafting or CAD, and computer programming during your first and second year. Other than math and computer courses, a degree in mechanical engineering also requires science courses from the second half of your second year through your fourth year in the program. Among the classes you need to take here are thermodynamics; material strength, processing and material science; vector and fluid mechanics; system dynamics; circuitry; and mechatronics. Courses in engineering ethics and writing are also necessary or required for this degree. However, there is an option that allows you to select a specialty field before you complete a degree based on the program offered by your preferred school. On the other hand, short term courses in mechanical engineering usually involve primarily in the computer modeling of issues related to engineering. These courses are also available in various reputable universities and colleges. For instance, Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering offers the Machine Shop Short-Course for six weeks, the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the ANSYS Short Course, and the Pro/Engineer Short-Course in a website tutorial format. The University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering has four various short-courses in the subjects such as particle and aerosol measurement; preservation of cellular, tissue, and molecular biospecimens; gas and air filtration; and bioaerosol measurement. The University of Washington's College of Engineering in Seattle has cold regions of engineering short-course that runs within five days only and conducted at various campus spots in the entire area. It notes that this course is specially designed to fulfill the requirements of arctic engineering degree for engineering and architecture licensure in the state of Alaska.
