Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and a major commercial and cultural centre. The city has a long association with banking and finance which expanded rapidly with the extension of the town during the nineteenth century. This made Edinburgh the most important financial centre outside London, generating an enormous amount of wealth which was reflected in the city’s splendid architecture. During the twentieth century Edinburgh continued to prosper as a result of the financial sector, although its lack of a manufacturing base had already led to it being outstripped by Glasgow which had developed into an industrial powerhouse. In 1999 the Scottish Parliament retuned to Edinburgh and the new Parliament building opened in 2004. Today the city has a stable economy dominated by services and boasts an abundance of commercial property options, with rents for offices and serviced offices in Edinburgh being a third of those businesses in London would expect to pay. With an array of attractions like its famous castle, the medieval Old Town and the elegant New Town, Edinburgh has earned the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the second most visited city in the UK. Indeed tourism has now become a major contributor to the economy of Edinburgh with 48% of all overseas visitors to Scotland visiting the city. This amounts to close to 3.5 million visitors a year providing a huge cash injection into leisure and retail commercial properties in the city. In fact hotel occupancy rates are above the national average and the city is among the top locations in the UK when it comes to revenue per room. As a major international banking and finance centre, Edinburgh has also become a key destination for business tourism which is now worth over £300 million a year to the city and the surrounding area. Edinburgh is now the second most popular UK location for business events and international conferences making meeting rooms in the city an in demand rental category. There are meeting rooms to rent in Edinburgh in a range of attractive locations including museums and galleries, visitor attractions and historic buildings. Among the venues providing meeting and conference facilities are the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Surgeons and even the Royal Yacht Britannia which is moored at Leith. Elsewhere there are meeting rooms available suitable for all types of business events and catering for all capacities. With so much to offer delegates, in terms of leisure and culture, it’s little surprise that Edinburgh is now the one of the leading business tourism destinations in Europe.
