Procedures for Restoration Dyeing

Research
There can be several situations where dyeing fabrics can restore discolored and damaged fabrics or satisfy a customer’s request for dyeing.

Although the drycleaner is limited in the selection of dyes, there can be effective results if the rules of dyeing fabrics are followed.

Rit dyes can be obtained in most large retail centers and the selection of colors is extensive. Rit dyes are direct dyes and are used to dye wool, silk, cotton, linen and rayon. Rit can also be used to dye nylon and acetate but will not dye metallic, plastic, polyester or acrylic.

The important thing about using direct dyes is to use hot water temperatures ranging from 140°F to 160°F. Customers should be forewarned that the result of dyeing is not guaranteed.

Preparation for dyeing fabrics

Before any dyeing takes place, the garment to be dyed should be thoroughly cleaned. Any soil, wax or dirt remaining on the fabric will inhibit the results of dyeing. If the fabric has been drycleaned, it should be clear rinsed to remove any detergent. If a garment has been bleached or any chemical used, it should be properly neutralized before dyeing is attempted. Most dyeing should be done on a white or off-white color. If a color is to be changed, it first must be bleached to a white color. A dark color can be made darker only with the same color. For example a black color can be deepened with more black. A blue color cannot be made black by overdyeing with black. This will result in a different shading on fabric.

Remember, the customer should be made aware that dyeing entire fabrics is at their own risk. The purpose of dyeing fabrics is to try to restore a completely unusable and unwearable garment to a wearable condition.

Dyeing in a pail or bucket

You can add Rit dye to a bucket using hot water (140°F-160°F). An easy way to heat water is to put a steam gun in the bucket and then press the steam pedal to heat the water. Use half the amount of dye to hot water. Shake bottle and add dye. Stir using a wooden paddle. Add salt and acetic acid. Put the garment in while wet and let it soak for 30 minutes. Agitate using a wooden paddle. Rinse in cool water. Extract garment and dry in dryer.

Tea dyeing

Sometimes when processing a wedding gown the antique or off-white color is lost. The reason why the wedding gown became whiter is that the gown or fabric was probably tea dyed.

Tea dyeing is used to create an off white fabric. It is frequently used to dye wedding gowns and veils. It can be used to dye tablecloths and other fabrics and can create an antique look. It cannot be used on thermoplastic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, acrylic and acetate. Tea dyeing is most effective when done with small buckets or pails rather than in the washing machine.
