For true connoisseurs of Indian fashion, Ritu Kumar needs no introduction and is considered as one of the most elite bridal designers in the Indian fashion world. Her global success and popularity with international A-list Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities has earned her a reputation as the 'Vera Wang' of Indian bridal wear and she is famed for her highly ethnic and regal bridal creations. Ritu started her career in 1969 and was a pioneer in introducing the 'boutique culture' across India under her label 'Ritu'. Since then she has expanded her presence in the fashion world and has set up boutiques across the Globe. Ritu's designs have adorned an enviable list of celebrities, including the late Princess Diana, Aishwarya Rai, Jemimah Khan. She will also be designing a bridal lengha for Bollywood Starlet Kareena Kapoor for her forthcoming wedding to Saif Ali Khan. Ritu is so much more than a designer label; she is the pioneer of India's fashion heritage to the world. Her forte is traditional Indian design using rich textile laden with embroidery. Its no wonder owning a Ritu Kumar is every Indian bride's dream, what with the intricate use of expert zari embroidery, embellishments and thread work, crafted in silks, georgettes, crepes and tissues. Ritu has proved to the world that her hand made garments can be even more beautiful than those made by machines, and a profitable means of keeping the art of traditional Indian craftsmanship alive. By reviving traditional Indian craftsmanship that she specialises in, such as printing, embroidery and handloom weaving, without losing any of her haute couture appeal, Ritu has distinguished Indian fashion and raised it to new heights In an exclusive interview with Your Dream Shaadi we glean some of Ritu's expert advice and views for Your Dream Shaadi's brides to be. Your label 'Ritu Kumar' has been a perennial hit for the last four decades of its existence; competition and changing tastes notwithstanding! What would you say has been the secret behind this success? I have always strived to have a signature on all my creations which others find hard to duplicate. I always try to find new inspiration from Indian history, period costumes from around the world and even Indian mythology and then I adapt them and make them my own. Also I prefer to make things that any type of bride can wear, from different shapes and sizes to different styles that a bride wants. To be a successful designer you have to be able to reach out to as many people as you can. Your outfits have a signature style. Where does the inspiration from your designs originate? Mainly by sticking to the classic and traditional elements within Indian fashion and design, for me they will never go out of style and they create a very regal look. These types of designs stem from the royalties of India, they were the biggest patrons of Indian crafts and they encouraged the best of crafts, particularly textile crafts. So by combining these vintage looks with contemporary bridal fashion I find that the limits are endless. I aim to make my designs and my dresses feel luxurious with an air of affluence so the bride truly feels like royalty on her big day, as every bride should! People instinctively know when they are looking at a Ritu Kumar bridal creation! In recent years we have seen a mixture of bridal trends; from Indowestern bridal gowns to a re-emergence of heavy Indian embroideries and traditional styles. Which amongst these will win out in 2012? I think both will continue to co-exist together. There is a market for both as each bride has her own individual taste and sense of what kind of look they want to achieve. That is the beauty of bridal gowns, tailoring every detail of the dress that will flatter and suit the needs of the bride. If a couturier cant cater to both ends of the spectrum or fuse them in whatever way the bride desires, I would suggest the bride looks elsewhere.
